Hello,
I am investigating feeding magnesium to one of our boys as he is a little spookster and also has stringhalt. I understand magnesium is thought to be helpful with nervous conditions. Has anyone any experience of feeding it and where the best bargain buys can be found for buying supplements. His nerves are not otherwise feed or workload related so I though it might be worth a go. Views appreciated....thank you.

I fed it to my ex racer, it did seem to chill her out a fair bit, though it's hard to say whether it was the magnesium, or just hard work! Anyway I used epsom salts, basically I couldn't find any advice for amounts so I just chucked a handful in her feed once a day.

Very scientific!

A couple of kilos is only a few quid, and personally I feel it worked better than the Naf stuff I tried which was several times the price!

Either Magnesium Oxide (MagOx) or Calcinised Magnesium (CalMag) are better absorbed than Epsom salts. You can pick up a bag on Ebay for just a few ££.

The other downside of Epsom salts is that it can give your horse the squitts!!

i used it on a tb pony it worked really well. she would get very stressed when she got to a show. so in the morning i would double dose and it calmed her down. i used global herbs and horse health. i tried the equine america and nupa feed but they did not work on her. i think you need to find the right one for your horse

I am feeding magnesium oxide to my horse as he is laminitic and I understand that the mag ox is helpful for weight loss and control. I bought the 250 mg tablets from the health food shop, I think they were about £4.50 for 100, and I gave my horse 8 a day (in two feeds) for the first couple of weeks, and now give him 2 in each feed. Certainly he has lost weight (with careful management granted) and he is amazingly chilled out, particularly as he's had to be on box rest some of the time.

I also feed Brewers' Yeast, and I have found that this acts as a brilliant calmer. It also helps digestion and acts as a midge deterrent. Great stuff! Gold Label make it, from the horse feed shops.

I believe a combination of these two supplements would help your horse immensely

I've used it since it pretty much came out about three years ago with a sharp horse and it does seem to work pretty much as they describe. I use Equifeast's Cool, Calm and Collected, and they have a lot of information on it on their website (although it is quite expenssive).
