Feeding Mare in foal...

Hi

I have recently been trusted with a friends mare that is due to give birth in May, I want to make 100% sure I am doing everything correct as she wasnt in the best of condition when she arrived as had been out all summer on not great grass.

1/2 scoop barley
1/2 scoop chaff
1 scoop beet
supplement for mares in foal (owners choice)
are sunflower seeds ok?

When my mare was in foal she was fed on stud mix but at the time it was suggested she was 'done too well' and did have difficulties getting the baby out (Mind you it was huge for my wee 15.22hh)

I just want to be 100% as its a big thing to have someones horse never mind when its pregnant

Have you had a chat to one of the feed companies - perhaps with the idea of giving her a more complete and rounded feed rather than barley and chaff.

My pregnant mare just gets happy hoof and only for the purposes of adding Regumate. But if she actually needed feeding then I would be looking for a complete feed.

Is she on better grazing now and have a good supply of hay if needed?

What is her grass like atm and is she on haylage/hay?
If she is looking well atm i would keep her on the feed shes used to. If she starts putting too much weight on then id look at reducing her feed. The last thing you want to do is complicate things with her being too weighty.

My mare was only on Alfa A, HiFibre cubes and a speedibeet throughout her pregnancy till the last trimester, when she changed onto a stud mix

At the moment she is out everyday with suprisngly good grass (the rain has been mad here!)
she is at night and gets haylage and is looking 100% better and have only had her 2 weeks very aware she cant get too much weight on her though

We used to feed our pregnant mares a complete stud mix, there is alot of good grass still where i am too, my mare is actually having to wear her muzzle, as they were moved to a very lush field 1-2weeks ago, hopefully it will die down soon, i am always paranoid about lammi,and it can strike any time really so muzzle for the next week or so it is.
Its very mild at present so she may not need much, maybe when it starts getting colder maybe add a bit of stud mix if the owner wants to

You should ring winergy or look on there website www.winergy.com

they have brought out a complete, fibre based stud feed called equilibrium growth. I saw them at Burghley, it has loads of benefits like improving immunity transfer, good behaviour, lower risk of DOD's etc

I asked them how they could prove it and they showed me 14 years worth of research!! i was very impressed and my vet says there is nothing else like it on the market and I'd trust him completely. Apparently they're happy to talk to your vet as well if you like.

They are the same people that make Happy Hoof so you know the quality will be good.
