Hi can anyone give me their advice on the above? My tb is lean but ok per the vet but I'd like him to be in more 'show' condition - partly beacuse I'd like to do some showing classes with him this spring / summer, and partly because he needs to build up a bit more anyway.

A trainer recommended feeding milk pellets this weekend, and I have read that milk powder like 'multi milk' is a cheaper alternative.

For those that have used it for getting to show condition, how much do you feed and is there anything to be aware of before I feed it?

I don't want to use something the the Rowan Barbary ready mash extra because it has oats and quite a high starch content which I want to avoid.

Current diet is fibre + oil + balancer

For milk pellets to work you have to feed tons of it and most horses dont like it, I have tried them all with my fussy TB, weighgain from Farnham works brilliant but is pricy, BUT.....
Linseed has done the trick for me, gutted i didnt swap years ago!

What do you currently feed? Have you thought about trying linseed or rice bran? Not everything can cope with milk pellets and you do need to feed them in large quantities to see a difference.

I feed my TB's micronised linseed and/or a rice bran pellet depending on workload. They all look super and I've had no issues keeping weight on this winter.

I've just put my TB on fenugreek and Linseed from Equss health and the difference is amazing!! I think a 3kg bag is about £10, feed a handful twice a day and it lasts ages.

Equivite Body Builder is milk pellets & I have used it before to great effect. Mine have loved it.

No knowledge of powder - i certainly wouldnt use calf milk replacer its designed for a very different gut.

Milk pellets are FAB. I feed Equivite Body Builder in conjunction with Bailey's Outshine to put condition on box rests and for sales prep.

The cheapest way to buy them is in the big 15kg tubs. They smell like white chocolate - careful you don't decide to stuff your face with them instead!

I had quite good results using milk powder but it was most definitely NOT calf milk powder as those have alsorts of other things added. The powder I used was the one made by SCA which has no additives and for all types of animals. Off the top of my head I cannot remember how much I fed but I used to make it up with warm water and used that to damp the feed, the horse in question would also lap it up out of his feed bowl like a cat if given the opportunity, he loved it!

the one I used is this one

Thankd for your advice everyone - keepi it coming! :-)

I like the sound of the equivite body builder - has anyone found it to be very heating? He doesn't need any hotting up!

Currently on 2 feeds a day, each feed is 1 mug fast fibre soaked, 1 mug balancer, 1 mug blue bag grass nuts, 2 stubbs scoops alfa a (yellow bag), some carrots and a big glug of d&h soya oil.

He doesn't like the alfa a oil chaff, and I don't want to increase the size too much or frequency of his meals.

He isn't very foody and not that into hay, don't want to go for haylage as I think he would get silly on it, ditto for conditioning mixes etc.

Britestar - can you point me in the direction of full fat soya? Never heard of it before, except for soya oil.

For those that feed the equivite body builder, I have seen a 2kg tub is around £20 - how long does this last people? And what do you do when they have gained enough weight?

The champion milk pellets would work out cheaper than the equivite body builder. If used in the correct quantities it can also be used as a feed balancer

Hello,

I have and do still use milk powder, for 2 reasons : 1 keep weight on and 2 it has a calming andti anxiety effect. But i do use calf milk powder - recommended by my vet who uses it on his evernters. Also i would think about adding oil into your diet.
