Hi all

Those of you with more than one horse, do you feed them on the same feeds where possible?

I now have 4 horses (don't know how that happened ) and wish they were on the same feeds - would make life so much easier when feeding in the field in the dark

Currently they have:
Lucky - Speedi beet, Mollichaff hoof kind, pony nuts
Willow - Fast fibre, healthy hooves
Blossom - Fast fibre, healthy hooves
Sox - Fast fibre, Hi-fi molasses free

Lucky was on the same as Willow/Blossom plus L mix added but she's become very itchy since been on the two Allen and Page feeds so I'm changing her.

Is it ever possible to have all your horses on the same feed

Lucky has had laminitis previously, as has Sox. Blossom puts weight on easily so is muzzled in the summer to help prevent her getting laminitis and Willow is only 17 months old

I feed both of mine the same feed but they are very similar in their requirements. Both are good doers, and although they are different ages, they both do well. They are only fed a low calorie balancer with a handful of chaff.

Yes it is possible to have horses on the same feed but you have to have loads of horses to be able to do this! I have herds of horses and I keep them in herds to suit their size, age and feed requirements. So, for example, my foals all get fed the same so they live in a field with a couple of old horses (who are the top guys in their field). The old horses are fed different feed but because they are above the foals they eat their larger feeds and as the foals get less they are finished before the oldies are so their feed isn't stolen from them. My broodmares are all fed the same so they are in their own field. The other herds I keep in size groups and they are all fed the same so again everyone eats at about the same speed. I have some others who are fed supplements in their feeds, they live with other horses but I have corrals that they come into to eat theirs. It's easy, just open the gate and let them in, go off and do whatever else I have to do and once finished I go back and open the gate and let them back into the field. I can't be doing with hanging around fields trying to keep everyone away from others feed so doing it my way works perfectly for me

Have you ever fed Happy Hoof?

It is a chaff but has non heating small amounts of fiber cubes in it and you may be able to use it instead of the Hi-Fi Molly and healthy hooves? Could also take Lucky off the cubes that way too?

I would recommend some oil in their diet over winter like Linseed?

If you can afford it - Blue Chip is a great way to supplement your horses feed despite their age or activity. You really will notice the difference ;-)

I have two horses and because life is never simple, they are both on completely different feeds. My veteran poor doer has feed aimed at condition whereas my ISH just gets a token feed in comparison

I feed all mine the same basic straights. Balancer, speedi-beet, grass nuts, graze on/hay chaff and Linseed (changing to rice bran soon though to try that instead) then I just change the amounts they each get fed depending on work load and condition. I'm trying Fasy Fibre at the moment instead of the Grass nuts, speedi-beet and balancer but it's not as economic so will be switich back shortly.

Lucky - Speedi beet, Mollichaff hoof kind, pony nuts
Willow - Fast fibre, healthy hooves
Blossom - Fast fibre, healthy hooves
Sox - Fast fibre, Hi-fi molasses free

I would ditch the Healthy Hoof and replace with Hi-Fi Molasses free, HH is higher in sugar than HiFi Molasses free - the molglo in the ingredients list is basically a lower sugar form of molasses, but it's still molasses - so if you're looking to feed something that's good for feet the HiFi molasses free is better. That would leave you with 3 on the same feed which would be a start!

I have 4 and all are on Pure Feeds - I use the Pure Working for my WB who although only in light work drops weight easily - I also have my little pony who as he is aged finds chewing hard so needs a nutritious feed. My Dales youngster and my good doer cob mare are on the Pure Balancer with a couple of handfuls of Happy Tummy. They all get a cup of speedibeet too.

I love the Pure Feeds.

Mine and my share horse both have the same, from the same feed bins. Share horse's owner and I take it in turns to buy. They have a scoop of hi-fi, 1/2 scoop cool mix and a scoop of sugar beet (as in a scoop post soaking, about 1/3 of as scoop dry) and carrots once a day. Mine isn't as good a doer as my share horse (although still pretty good as you can see from amounts they're fed. They are 16.3 and 17hh ISHs!) but does less work so the same suits them. We would feed them differently if we needed to, but only if i REALLY needed to. Apart from anything we don't have space to store anything else.

Mine all get the same from mini Shetlands to a TB. They are all adults and of course get according to their size. lol

Speedibeet, high spec balancer, extra salt and micronized linseed. They are all off grass atm and on soaked hay with some oat straw.

Nope due to different ages and types :)

K 22 gets

Veteran vitality, alfalfa, hoofmender and joint supp

S who is 6 gets fed on when in work gets

daily double handful of alfalfa and half a scoop of sugar beet and general supp.
daily a few days before outings half scoop of alfalfa, half scoop of oats/Turbo, half scoop of sugar beet and general supp

I was feeding spillers lite/normal balancers for a while but went back to the above as this gave her more energy than the balancers :)

If I was feeding more than one, it would be a matter of finding something that worked for both (unless one required a very expensive diet, or I was feeding a lami and a welfare case!) I would generally look at something like either a topspec balancer and then any additions required; simple pony nuts and sugar beet, or if they required a different bag of feed each, ie one cool mix and another race horse feed, they would get their allocated amount, with a bit of sugarbeet.

Yep, i have 3 and 2 are fed the same base, the 3rd isn't fed any hard feed at all as he is lardy enough on just grazing. I would give him Alfa and supabeet if he dropped off to the point i thought he needed extra (not looking to be any time soon!!). The other 2 are IDX event mare (lov level aff.) and 3.5 year old warmblood who is wintering out. I feed them both Alfa A oil and Supabeet with varying amounts of additional oil. Event mare gets joint supp and vit & min supp, youngster gets gut balancer. Event mare gets D&H staypower cubes when she needs a bit extra energy through the event season. I plan on doing the same for youngster if she needs it. So 2 (occasionally 3) base feeds and 4 supplement tubs. Not quite as 'scaled down' as some might have it, but works well for my lot! :)

I have 6 and they all get the same but different quantities, they get balancer, linseed and fast fibre and 3 get cortaflex HA. No faff

I have two horses and feed them very similar feeds - they currently have hi-fi, fast fibre and pink powder. They also get hi fibre nuts, and one is on devils claw.

They both get very similar size feeds too - one of them is 14.1 and is ridden 5 times a week, the other is 15.1, 19 and just does very light work.

They both look really well !

Yeah when at one point we had five on a private yard they all had the same feed, so much easier.

I've now moved mine to livery but they are both good doing welsh D's and get fast fibre, timothy chop, joint supplement hoof supplement and linseed. Currently they are getting a cup full of simple systems lucie fibre cubes but they aren't big fans so will be trying them on baileys hi fibre cubes instead.

I am soon to have three who will all have different requirements. 15.1hh 15yr old working but very good doer, 22yr old native pony not so good doer and 12hh childs riding welsh a. Have very complicated feed at the mo due to minerals and barefoot issues but am going to scrap that as not convinced its working and had a good chat with PureFeeds person and could probably get away with Fibre Balance for 2 of them and condition for the older chap plus linseed, bit more copper and mag ox and joint supplement. Take a look at the website and do a search on here - there seems to be a lot of good reviews and it might simplfy things for you
