I have a 6 year old, TB mare who raced as a 2/3yo four times and has had 2 years off. She was retrained just before Christmas and I have only had her for coming up to two weeks.
I purchased the same food the previous owner had her on for now, but in the long run Id like to change it (I think)
She lives out and at times like now, where grass isnt at its best, a slice of hay in morning and another at night. She also has one feed in morning, being ½ scoop of Alfa-A oil, ½ scoop of Alfa-Beet and ¼ scoop of competition mix. Id like to keep her on the Alfa-A oil and Alfa-Beet but maybe slowly change the competition mix???
I purchased her to keep for ROR classes and dressage mainly, with a bit of jumping and hunting in future. Currently I hack once a week, she lunges well, will be long reined soon and just schooling at the moment. She is a fairly calm mare and I will include picture at end to show how she currently looks.
I really should know all this as for my degree last year, I put together a nutrition formulation which I did surprisingly well in, but can I remember how? Of course not
I also worry about feeding her in the week for the days I am at uni. It doesnt affect her from riding aspect but I know we shouldnt really feed horses concentrate, if theyre not working the next day. But I want her to have something to maintain the condition and to still fit in with when she is ridden.
She is currently fed same amount every morning out in the field with my youngster, but she is only ridden 3-4 of those days.
I am not sure if I should decrease it accordingly or just carefully change the comp mix to something more suitable? I personally think she looks in fairly good condition, but I still think I could be feeding her a better diet?
Thanks for any help in advance
