I know oil can help improve energy and stamina and I think my boy might benfit from being a fed a bit of oil. Obviously it won't affect his fitness but often at events he kind of seems to run out of energy towards the end, before he has sweated up and got a little puffy so I think he just needs something a little more to keep him going! So which oil is the best for energy? How much should I feed him? As he can be fussy would it be better to feed something like Alfa A oil or outshine?
Thanks :)

You need to feed an oil higher in omega 3 than omega 6 otherwise new research shows it can cause joint inflammation/ Rapeseed oil is good and the co-op's own make is rapeseed

soya oil is unfortunately higher in omega 6 so personally I would not feed it even though it has been used for years

why is that, neither of mine had any problem and know of a few others that feed it without issues that we know of.

I originally starting feeding it to see if it desensitised my horse to the rapeseed crop that he was allergic too (didn't work)

If you don't want to feed it just find one that is higher is omega 3 than 6

Not sure what you need for energy but I've always thought oil was calories without fizz, I give mine sunflower oil just for a shiny coat, might be an idea to ring Dengie helpline believe it or not they were quite inpartial when I rang them and didn't push their own products down your throat, Dodsen and Horrel helpline are good too and NAF as well.

My vet always told me to feed for what they've done not what they might do, thats what I've always done, I have to be careful with mine's weight anyway he had lami few years back, touch wood not had it since, so must be doing something right xxx fingers

Alfa A etc are slow release energy, but are equivalent to a low energy course mix in energy but its released differently, from what I understand !

Don't be pushed into feeding competition feed unless its required be careful

Thank you for the advice! I'm just thinking forward to the summer, and getting some ideas, so have plenty of time to think everything over! Obviously I want to do what will suit him best. Last year I was feeding him Alfa A and Spillers slow release energy mix when eventing/ PC teams etc and he was plenty fit enough and had reasonable time to recover inbetween events, he just didn't seem to have enough energy to keep him going.

feeding oil does help with stamina, but you need to be feeding a substantial amount, and IMO you cannot do that with liquid oil without lining the gut and causing them to get the runs.

Ah ok, that's interesting :) Thank you!
