Hiya :) I have a 9yo 17hh Oldenburg who is currently his ideal weight. He's never one for 'getting fat' even in summer  and through winter is prone to dropping a bit of weight..my question is about adding oil to his current feed as an extra help to maintain his weight as he is now? I've read Vegetable oil can be good? Any opinions on feeding oil? My boy can get quite excitable so wouldn't want to start feeding him something that will make him full of himself...or should I say more full of himself :p Any advice appreciated! :)

I wouldnt bother with vegetable oil I dont think it has any real benefits for horses, I feed micronised linseed which can keep condition and is also good for coat skin and joints, you can also buy linseed in liquid oil form if you prefer another one I used to feed is the global herbs flax oil which is more or less the same thing.

Hi after lots of research on my horse with gastric ulcers one of the things they advise is to feed oil, corn oil really helps and is said thats its good to put weight on, you can buy it from most supermarkets about £1.80 for a litre xx

I feed corn oil to a 29 year old mare I look after, just a big dollop per feed. Since she has started having it her coat and eyes are much brighter and shinier, and she isn't as much of a stiff old lady like she was! Even her owner was amazed at the difference and couldn't believe the corn oil was the only thing I'd changed, she thinks she looks years younger!

I was going to give the corn oil a go first since it's easily picked up in the shop en route to the stables, and if it didn't work was going to get her micro linseed, but since the corn oil has worked so well she is just staying on it.
