Molly will be twelve next year, not that that is old but she is heading into her teens and I am keen to keep her as supple as possible as we will be going medium in the spring and hope to be adv medium by end of the year and carry on from there. Was reading my friends bottle of cod liver oil and it says it helps with mobility so was wondering if I shoudl start feeding her oil or can anyone recommend anything else? Not going down the cortaflex route etc as there isn't anything wrong with her - just maintenance I am after.
Thanks

I have a bit of a thing about feeding fish oil to a herbivore and would be more inclined to look at linseed but thats just a personal feeling.

There are loads of cod liver oil based powders and supplements on the market and you may find that these will be more palatable than the liquid.

I think any oil but as spaniel says I think I'd go down the vegan route!

I would give it for any age/type of horse, its brilliant stuff. They shine, gloss up, it MUST be good for them.

Yeah thanks I also have a bit of a problem with it I must admit, just seems wrong. So would linseed be just as effective then? Isn't it rather fattening though as she is a really good doer. Don't think she would bother too much in the palatability department as she eats just about anything!!

The horses on our yard nearly all have about 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in their feeds.

They all have shiny coats and doesn't seem to do them any harm

You wouldnt need to feed linseed in large amounts for her to get the benefits internally. I find it also gives the skin and coat great condition.

What about using a chaff like alpha a with oil then you wont have to add anything.

I use Alpha-A Oil too. I think it is selennium and vitamin E that you have to add if you feed ordinary oil.

I use the Alfa Oil aswell - I also add a cup full per day of Soya Oil to his feed. He has a lovely shiney coat, the shine even shows through when hes fully clipped, his skin, mane and tail is also in great condition.

I do mainly feed it as he is a poor doer and it helps keep the weight on. I dont think it will alter wight if fed in small amounts though, perhaps a few tablespoons a day.

Soya oil is only 80p a litre from Tesco (my mate was paying £12 for 5lites from a feed store
