I am considering feeding my horse oil to give him some more condition and a nice shine.

I have read a bit about humans eating oils, and it seems that a lot of hydrogenated fats can be very bad indeed for people.

Does the same apply to horses?
With this in mind, which is the best oil to feed?
Advice welcome

I read on here a while ago that you need to give them quite an excessive amout to do them harm.

I feed Baron 1 mug full of Soya Oil per day (found this best compare to sunfower and corn). In addition to this he also has Alfa oil. His coat is really shiney.

I did a post and Im sure its over 250ml you need to give them something else

Hi, I'm thinking of introducing flax oil for coat skin and condition. Also thinking about taking it myself don't think it has saturated fat in it.

In processes like margarine making oils are hydrogenated to make them solid at room temperature. This creates trans-fatty acids which are thought to be harmful.

However if you are feeding straight oil like sunflower for example you are not feeding hydrogenated fat. It is polyunsaturated and will not do your horse any harm.

Though if he's like mine, he might not like it much

You need to give a Vitamin E & Selenium Supplement (Equimins do a good economical one) if feeding oil in any great quantity. My EPSM mare gets oil every day - up to 600 mls a day depending whether she is struggling with her EPSM or not at the time. I feed Veg oil but you need to check that the one you are feeding is pure and not mixed with anything else.
