Just wondering what oil people think is best to feed for overall condition (maintains weight, glossy coat etc)? I'm looking at corn oil or linseed oil at present.

Corn oil has a good protective effect on the stomach mucosal lining so is recommended for ulcer prone horses... BUT its ratio of Omega-3 to the other Omegas isn't the best. If you are going to choose one for condition and general health, I'd go for micronized linseed as it has the right good fats to replace what's missing in winter pasture and has a genuine value, whereas corn oil overdoes the Omega 6, and really just has oil calories, no protein or vits or mins.

On the other hand, corn oil makes the coat even shinier than micronized linseed does, but that's just vanity :D :D

I feed it for endurance. Soy or corn oil is fine - I start small, about 100 mls and build them up to about 250 mls per day.

x2 re the omega 6 vs omega 3. Micronised linseed is a bit of a mystery to me, but I buy whole linseed and crush it daily in a coffee grinder.

Corn oil does make them real shiny! And will put weight on but not as all round healthy as micronised linseed. Linseed oil is good too but I think the micronised one is digested more effectively so not being passed through like many expensive supplements we buy :-)

The most important thing is not to feed a lot of oil at one time as they can't digest it.

As others have said, linseed is excellent for weight gain and shine, and has many other benefits too, which straight oils do not have.

Micronised linseed is a bit of a mystery to me, but I buy whole linseed and crush it daily in a coffee grinder.

I do this too Jenny but I think I'm the only one who does over in Blighty! Micronised linseed is good, but I'm concerned that as the bags are 20kg and I only need about 100gms a day, it might go off before I could use it as it would last me more than 6 months!

i swear by micronized linseed, i wasnt convinced at first but turns out i just wasnt feeding him enough haha :o once i upped the amount he's become a different animal, a lot happier in himself, looks better and seems to have more energy, but that could be down to feeling good!
