So my horse has just started a course of this.

The first day the syringe was fine. The second it most certainly was not.

We aren't going to force him to have it via the syringe - I feel like that will only make things worse in the long run.

So we are reduced to putting it in his feed. I know this doesn't work as well as via the syringe, but has anyone done it this way and seen good results? Or does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

When my mare was first diagnosed with liver disease she was on a silly amount of medicines and she hated having a syringe in her mouth and because she was a good doer we didn't want to give her to much feed so our vet suggested giving her a marmite sandwich. Mix the medicine with the marmite then spread it on the bread and she loved it, it's also really good for repelling flies. She use to look forward to her sandwich coming and eat it straight down, I think you can also use honey.

I don't know how effective peptizole will be in feed. I believe they are supposed to have it before feed - better talk to your vet about it. Could you try getting horse to tolerate syringe by administering something tasty in it - apple pulp/treacle?

I have spoken to my vet, and he has said that it should work but is less effective.

I was really just wondering if anyone else had had to feed it this way and if it still worked.

There is nothing I can do to get him to take the syringe...honestly it's not worth stressing him out over it. He won't let us get near him. It's dangerous and while I'm sure it's something I could fix given time, I don't have time!

Personally I'd persevere with the syringe. My mare was awful for the first few days of Gastrogard and then just got used to it. She used to be a nightmare with wormer too, but now just stands and we can do it without even a head collar on.

I'm not sure it would be very appetising in feed, especially if you've got a fussy eater? We have to syringe everything with mine as she won't have pain killers/ antibiotics in feed :-/

Peptizole should ideally be fed after 30 mins starving and then the horse should be starved 30 mins after before any more feed. I asked my vet if I could put it in my mares feed as she hated anything in a syringe but he said absolutely not. It is very expensive per tube so I would be wanting it to work to the best of its ability.
I spent the first week hanging on to my mare for dear life but after that she realised that it was going to happen no matter what and now she doesn't even need a head collar. I would start just by catching her and not letting her see the syringe. I would then stroke all around her mouth and occasionally pop my finger in the corner of her mouth to simulate the syringe and then go back to rubbing her mouth, I would then do the same with the syringe after a few minutes just stick it in and squirt! This worked well for me when I didn't have time to do the apple sauce training.
Good luck, I know how difficult it is when they get so upset about it.
