Starting my horse on 30 piriton a day for his allergies. Vet has said to trial it for 2 weeks to see if there's any improvement, but not to ride him as a side effect is drowsiness. Obviously I understand why the vet has said not to ride but I know my horse and if he shows no side effects then I still want to ride him.

Does anyone here feed or fed piriton in the past? Did your horse become drowsy? Did you still ride?

Thanks :)

I feed it. Mare got 25 a day for 3 days last year when she had a reaction to something & rubbed her neck raw. She's around 600kg and the vet said I probably wouldn't notice any effects. An hour after she took them I led a rather drunk horse out to the field!

We tapered down to 10 a day and she was ok to ride on that but still a bit spaced out.

My gelding (750kg) had the same amount and didn't show any dopiness at all so it's probably horse specific. I get knocked out on just 1 tablet in hay fever season.

You can bulk buy piriton on line btw

Tiny fuzzy has them in the spring to early summer, starting on 20 a day.
After 3 weeks i cut her down to 14 a day. Absolutely no indication of drowsiness, she is 33 inches tall.
Totally monitored by eminent vet for last 3 years , no side effects at all.

A tub of 500 is under a tenner.

I used it for one of mine under vets advice, I think at the time there was no option for the non drowsy tablets, I gave him 10 in the morning and got on to ride later, a few wobbly steps and I was very quickly off, he was totally out of it, I would be careful but think they have a different effect now.

My doctor friend says humans can have very, very different responses to piriton - which is why the warnings are on the packet. No reason I suppose why horses can't be the same.

Incidentally my 600kg mare who is flat out after 20 is also hugely sensitive to sedative. She has a note on her vet record that she is to be given the same as a pony 1/2 her weight if we want to keep her standing.

Mine has 10 cetirizine a day rather than piriton through the summer but no drowsiness at all, just turns him from miserable headshaking lunatic to happy rideable horse.
