Hi, we've just bought an 8 month old filly, she's been on good grass and is looking nice and chunky. When she comes home my other horses will probably be on haylage by then so is good quality haylage ok for her or is hay better? Also what kind of hard feed should she be getting? Out grass is pretty good but it's not amazing so they usually get a bale of hay out in the field January time, they are in at night also. Thanks 😊

Do you know how long she has been weaned? When milk is first withdrawn, they need a bit of extra protein. Once they've made the adjustment, I just feed haylage and a TEENSY amount of Bailey's Stud Balancer - as well as access to a mineral lick. You don't want them growing fast - that's a recipe for OCD.

Hay or haylage is fine as long as its good :)

I've never had to feed hard feed to any of my youngsters, but always had plenty of grass.

It would depend on her breed and also if she is on any hard feed at the moment whether I decided to give her extra.

Essentially I am saying play it by ear, and only add hard feed if she really needs it as long as she has adlib forage :)

okay thanks everyone, she's been weaned about a month, think I will just feed her haylage and then maybe a handful of hard feed if she's needs it

The balancer is important if you are going to hard feed as you get all the esentials they need like mins and vits and protein but in a small package so more suitable than topping up with hardfeed.
