Hi All
Since becoming an apartment dweller i have acquired two mini pomeranian puppies to replace the Springer spaniels who had to stay behind in my mums! The dogs at home were working dogs fed on whatever was on our table that day and they are fine eating like that. However the puppies are 9months old and fully grown and are absolutely tiny- they weigh 2 lbs each and therefore have a tiny stomach which i now know from experience is pretty prone to upsets. A raw diet is completely unviable- i have a housemate who would not appreciate raw meat lying round the place nor do i think it would suit these little dogs. So i have been feeding cooked chicken and vegetables to them twice daily and leaving some puppy kibble for them to chew on during the day but which usually goes virtually untouched. They also get roast beef and steak pieces if i have some left over from dinner and also duck bones which they really enjoy. The vet has said they are in great condition athough he would recommend putting them on a more balanced diet (and what do you know he happened to sell the balanced food he recommended- what a surprise!) So i guess i want to know if people think this diet is ok or is there more i could be feeding them ?

Awww, what a cutie. I also live in an apartment, though my small dog is bigger than yours (17lbs). To get an idea of what to add to your fresh food, you might want to take a look at the concoction made by my local holistic pet store. If you're going to feed just chicken and veg, it's crucial that you add some sort of dog vitamin, flax/fish oil, and ground egg shell/bonemeal.

Organic turkey breast, ginger, garlic, parsley, carrots, zucchini, broccoli, apple cider vinegar, omega 3 fish oil, flax seed, sea meal, slippery elm powder, blue/green algae, dried cranberry, taurine, bone meal, zinc, vitamin E, scorbate C, bee pollen, grapefruit seed extract, trace minerals, digestive enzymes, lecithin.

oh thanks wow thats quite a list of extras that they need- do you reckon i could get some sort of multi vitamin from my pet store/ vet that i can give them to ensure they dont miss out on anything? i take capsules of blue/green algae because its considered a superfood- wonder if i could give some of them to the dogs?

I dont have a small dog but we feed our puppy nature diet. Its a complete feed so you wouldnt need to add anything to it and its alittle more appetising than the kibble. It is more similar to the meat you are feeding but doesnt require freezing and for a dog your size would hardly cost a thing!

Unless you know what you're doing--or could ask a friend who's experienced in pet nutrition--I would stick to the multivitamin, a flax pill and bonemeal (and just measure out the appopriate amount for all items, as per the containers).

My mini JRT (about 4.5lbs)n eats the small breed science diet, and loves it. She gets 3 small meals a day, and there is never anything left in her dish. She gets some chicken or fish as well but that is "treats".

Your pom is v cute - just like a tiny fox!!!
