I have 2 very good doers living out 24/7.
I plan to strip graze this winter plus hay but they will gobble up their grass strip and hay ( given 7am and 6 pm) so quickly I am concerned they will go for hours with nothing,
Increasing grass strip or more hay is not an option as they will gain weight. I am thinking of feeding straw to give them something to nibble on that being less appetising may be eaten more slowly. I am concerned as have read too much straw can cause colic and I am not sure if oat or barley is best. How much straw should I feed to cobs 14.2 on the basis the grass/ hay covers nutrional need and straw is just something to keep the gut working.
