The last few weeks has been a bit of a nightmare!
16 year old Tb x 15.1 h just about right weight on grass 24/7 although very good, limited and strip grazed.
Atm fed on SS Lucie bix ( about 1 scoop split between am and pm) and same of Kwik beet. Biotin for hoof growth and joint supplement.

Ridden 4/5 times a week mainly hacking for two hours and 1, 1 hour lesson a week.

Spooking a lot just lately, had me off twice, excellent in traffic tho! Just wondered if there is anything else I should give/ cut out of his diet to help. He is quite an anxious chap especially when I get the horse box out!

Any advice is very very welcome.

Have you changed his feed at all in the last few weeks? If not, it could just be the grass coming through that is making him sharp. Personally, I would try taking off the alfafa and beet and either give him a handful of chaff to mix his supplements with, or if you really feel he needs extra feed then give him some high fibre cubes (if you soak them before use then they make a good base for supplements).

I will cut out beet from today, I thought all chaffs were based on alfalfa? is there one that isn't? Feed hasn't changed since I bought him 4 months ago, before he was on hi-fi lite, so I could put him back on that.

Alfa is lucerne, happy hoof and hi fi and the like are straw and other non exciting bits and bobs. My TB mare lives on happy hoof, looks well on it and certainly doesnt seem wanting for energy. Dread to think what she would be like is she sniffed some alfalfa.

The main ingredient of Hi-fi is alfalfa tho, according to the Dengie website, and Spillers Happy Hoof also has alfalfa in it?! Its all too confuzerling for me

Spring grass is low in magnesium and if you have nervy type this just exacerbates it. I'd get him on a magnesium calmer pronto!! NAF Magic is pretty good. Exactly the same thing used to happen to me with my previous TB and magnesium was fantastic!

I found magnesium did nothing for my tb as did naf magic but having discover Topspec calmer my horse is now rideable and i'm enjoying her again

Well, went to feed merchants this am; she persuaded me to just feed him high fibre cubes and add some corn oil; spring grass is what everyone is saying, so I didn't get any magic, but I'll see how it goes for a few weeks.

Just a word...but I was informed when looking in to magnesium calmers, that magnesium is only necessary if you actually get your horse checked for it ie. blood test and they are low in it. Otherwise their bodies just use what it needs and disposes of the rest!!! So it could be a waste of money.
Spring grass can have amazing powers!!!

[/ QUOTE ] Not all chaffs are alfafa-based - some are straw-based, like Bailey's Golden Chaff. Hi Fi Lite is a blend of straw and alfafa.
