My filly is now living out so was thinking of feeding her suregrow once daily as opposed to twice a day. Our yard has lost its second horse this winter to colic and it's just made me think is one feed risky in any way?

One bucket feed a day is fine as long as the horse has continual access to forage. What sort of colic did the horses on you yard have?

They were both in their 20s and had suffered it before, the first one went just as I moved on the yard and the second one v recently so havent heard what the vet said yet. V shocking and upsetting for everyone as we are only a small yard and to lose 2 in a space of 3 months is tough on everyone. No obvious cause and no change of feed or routine...

You should be OK so long as it's a small feed, ie don't put the two feeds you have been giving her into one large one. The horse's digestive system can't cope with large amounts of starch all at once.

Make sure she has plenty of good quality forage and she'll be fine.

The issue is with the suregrow I need to feed according to her weight so this would be 2 scoops which looks a lot all in one bucket. Then I have heard of people given less than the recommended dose.. Although as a rising 2 yr old I'm keen on her getting her full quota.

She's on grass and hay and the balancer. I guess the sensible thing to do would be to get her in twice a day for 2 feeds as per routine as it does look a lot to give in one go but I don't want her deficient in vits.

I think once the good grass starts coming through I'll just give a cup a day rather than bring her in twice a day. Just started on mag ox also, so far so good!

lornaA - I take it you don't feed the recommended amount for body weight in just one feed though, is that right? As that's my worry, it's too much for one feed but I still want to make sure she's getting all the vits she needs which won't be in hay or probably the grass as it is now...

Sure grow is a balancer so presumably not fed in huge quantities. What size scoop are you talking about? Have you measured how much your scoop weighs?

TGM - I have weighed out the quantity required (approx 2 mug fulls just to give an idea) I just scoop it up in a tuperware container as it happens to be just the right size 'scoop' the the RDA, It looks a lot to me spesh when I mix a bit of water with it as helps mix the mag ox in and it swells slightly hence being cautious about feeding it in one feed. I have noted that quite a few posters have said they feed less than recommended as the RDA seems rather a lot..

I'm not quite sure why you're adding anything to the Suregrow as it has all they need; by adding another mineral you're unbalancing it.

Yes, one meal would be fine but don't increase the amount from one feed too quickly, do it over a few days.

this^^ at 2 I would switch to a balancer designed for 'adult horses' that is generally the recommendation.
