I am wondering what people feed their TBs/ex racers/poor doers. I have bought a 3 year old ex racer and she’s very ribby and in great need of condition. I’m used to feeding good doers so I am unsure where to start.

Her previous owner just had her out in the field with no hard feed.

I will be giving her adlib hay and 24 hour turnout.

Is it acceptable to feed her an unmolassed chaff and linseed? All the “conditioning” feeds have very high feed ratios that I will end up getting through a bag in about 5 days. I want something not too bank-breaking but that will do the job.

When was the horse last in training?
It would be good to see a photo to assess if this is a fit horse ribby, a typical 3yo ribby or a poor horse ribby.

Worming. Teeth.

Id then feed one of the commercial ulcer feeds. But a little at a time.

If the horse doesn’t pick up after a couple of months on good grass I’d get scoped (and treated if necessary) before winter sets in.

She was in training about 9 months ago then they used her as a nanny hack before her previous owner got her.

Would you worm count or just worm straight away?

Teeth have been checked.

Okay so something like Topspec’s ulsakind cubes?

If you don't know her worming history I would worm.
My tbs have micronised linseed, forage plus hoof and skin health and salt with two cups of fast fibre to bind it together.

I have 2 x ex-racers, one 16.1 18 year old who's pretty much retired & a 17hh 10 year old, in work (when sound...he is atm), both b/f. They are out at grass in the day, on the yard at night & they can wander in & out of the stables as they see fit, full hay net in each stable topped up twice a day so never without food. Both fed Agrobs musli, Agrobs soaked weisencobs, micronised linseed...then about 6 or 7 weeks ago I added half a scoop each twice a day of Agrobs soaked protein flakes & OMG they are both really filling out! They were both underweight - 10 yo was only bought a few months ago, 18 yo came back off loan quite poor. Both have had teeth done & worm counted. 18 yo is also on AloeRide as his digestion is iffy & he is prone to gassy colics without it & he looks a lot better & more comfortable when he's on it.
