I've been offered some two year old hay for next to nothing and as i normally feed haylage I'm not up to speed with the hay. Is it ok to feed two year old hay? it's been stored in a hay barn and was put away dry. When it was cut it was top top quality but having been stored it's gone rough and has gone much darker in colour than when it was when it was cut. I literally need it as roughage imnot worried about the nutrient content the horse gets all her vits and mins from hard feed and I will be soaking it as she does cough a bit on hay. It smells fine and there's no mould will it be ok to feed?

Sounds perfect for your needs. I would love to find a supply of 2009 hay for my good doers! Watch out for dustiness, but that's easily solved with soaking or steaming. If it has been well made and barn kept that should be your only problem though.

Mine are on 2009 hay and it's absolutely perfect for them. They only need it to keep their guts going at night as they both run on fresh air. Plus it's a hell of a lot cheaper as my YO wants it gone!

It will have lost some colour and be a bit drier than this years hay. The dryness may tend to make it a bit more dusty due to "shatter" but this is not a problem if you damp it. If it is not mouldy ,fine, I would feed it.
