I strongly suspect that my horse may have ulcers, and have vet coming out tomorrow for jabs/talk about perhaps getting him scoped.

If so, what is the best diet for him? He's currently on Hi Fi Lite and A&P Sustain Mix, with ad lib hay.

Would ideally cut out the mix as not sure whether this would irritate?

I'm aware I'd need to up his fibre but am also wondering about things like manuka honey, aloe vera?

Many thanks

I would certainly plum for Aloe Vera - great stuff and it won't do any harm.

Manuka Honey, I am not sure about. I have heard that locally produced honey is same/better than Manuka - but I am not an expert on it.

I do swear by herbs and have used blends by Equinatural. I recommend them so often that I am scared of being accused of advertising!

If I had any worry re feeding, I would always speak to Roger Hatch of Trinity Consultants as the first port of call.

Fibre fibre and more fibre. Different kinds of fibre is a key as well....cut out sugars and starches.

There are plenty of good supplements on the market and a lot of good herbal options (Slipery Elm, Brewers yeast, licourice root, marshmallow root, aloe etc)

I would strongly recommend looking at the possible causes as well as treating the ulcers, otherwise they WILL come back.

Is the horse having long periods of time with no fibre to eat? (4 hours is enough to start a problem)

Is the horse in a stressfull situation? Stabled for long periods of time? In a field with a bully?

Are there other underlying causes? My boy had ulcers that were just a ymptom of something more sinister - he has RER and the stress from the muscle pain was causing the ulcers.

Also, I hope you're insured! Gastrogard is magic stuff but it ain't cheap!!!

He's turfed out at 7 and brought in again about half past 3 on good grass, and then as said before fed ad lib hay. He also gets a nut ball in the mornings of High Fibre Cubes.

He used to event so I'm not sure whether if this is the case whether it could have originally come from here, but he shows most of the 'signs,' of having them so a bit of an investigate cant hurt :)

As already said fast fibre and any other types of fibre based feed, i would get rid of any types of mixes and as much turn out as possible. When you have the scope they will advice you on the best action to take and if they find any gastrogard which is not cheap and normally have to be on it for a month. When my girl had them i rang the Dengie feedline to see what they said to feed her and found them helpful.
