the yearling i have who is 1 and 3 months is currently just on grass and hay. shoulkd i be feeding him hard feed or something-as i worry about vitamins for growing bones!!
This years is on youngstock mix, sugar beat, and a good vitamin suppliment. He is turned out 24/7 on excellent grazing and comes in each morning for his grub, and then goes back out.
Obviously each breed is different. However, ours are all sports horse types, who we find need the extra support.
A little cob type or pony breed may well be managed very differently.
I have had both my natives since foals, and when they were growing they had very little hard feed, but they did have some chop (happy hoof) to put a good all-round supplement in. I use Top Spec comprehensive but its an individal choice.
If he looks well I wouldn't bother feeding him hard feed.
If you're worried about vits and mins you could always get one of those licks in a bucket in his field to supplement his diet.
If the yearling is on good grass and looks well then I'd leave well alone, feeding too much might encourage it to grow too rapidly with the extra "calories" but it might not be supported by the right nutrients so the growth would be weak, Dr Green normally works fine!
mine is WB yearling
