Feeding your horse

Hi everyone,

A question that would really be appreciated to get your views on as owners, "when feeding horses, do you think marketing is a major influence?" For example, Do top riders influence the way you buy your feeds?

Please give your options and views as doing a piece of coursework on it for uni.

No, marketing does not influence the way I feed my horses and I certainly wouldn't take any notice of a 'top rider' in a feed advert.

(Thinks: how did we ever manage to get degrees without t'internet??)
 
No, I have a good doer/borderline laminitic so I have to be very careful what he eats. He is fed according to his dietary needs. I was 'fished in' by balancers once but never again. For advice I will ask the farrier, vet, feed seller, friends or HHO before I will look at adverts. Neither does a promotional discount influence me. And I always read the ingredients!!!
 
I could not give a dam what these riders say, half the time they say they use them well that's a joke they do not they just get paid shed loads of money to indorse the product. I feed my girl what is best for her and her alone.
 
Nope I do my best to inform myself, and in particular if I have a horse who needs careful diet management for a condition such as cushings/ laminitis I'd do even more research and once I've found something that works I stick to it unless the horse's requirements change. Marketing for eg pro rider advertising does not interest me, an exact break down of the vitamins/ minerals etc that the feed contains does however! :)
 
thanks everyone for those comments, all very good points and all have a similar view :)

Where you get your feed from, is this a big part of getting your feed? Is it easier to buy feeds that are local to you and easy?
 
I'm another who only buys the simplest of feeds and I'm certainly not influenced by pro-riders or any other marketting strategy.
I buy my feeds locally and yes I choose the particular feedmerchant because they stock the feeds I want. Two other local ones don't stock everything, so I only use them if my favourite has run out of something which they do stock.

Probably true. Personally I couldnt care what the famous riders feed, every horse is different and it depends hugely on so many factors (ie. type of horse, temp, workload, any health issues etc.).

I've minimised my feeding to Alfa A and speedi-beet, thats it. Just pure fibre.
 
Used to but not any more - now I just aim for the simplest high fibre diet possible with the lowest sugar and other junk content . . . I really admire the top riders for their riding ability but I don't really care what they feed their horses
