Has anyone tried this? Horse no.2 went barefoot 4 weeks ago, and I was toying with the idea of adding micronised linseed her diet, when I came across Barefoot Formula on the Feedmark website. It looks like it has some other wonder ingredients in it too. I've nearly run out of my sack of Formula 4 Feet, so wondered whether to give it a go.

The website says it contains the following:

Micronised Linseed: a rich source of proteins and omega-3 essential fatty acids that are essential for maintenance of cellular complexes within the hoof tissues
Brewer's Yeast: a natural probiotic that also supplies minerals and B vitamin, including Biotin, that help to balance the diet and maintain a healthy hindgut environment
Seaweed: a source of minerals essential for the formation of enzymes that are necessary for normal metabolism and growth of hoof structures
Rosehips: a herb with antioxidant and soothing properties that also helps to reduce swelling and soreness
Magnesium Oxide: an essential mineral for healthy hoof tissue that also supports normal insulin function

Any feedback appreciated.

Agree, if they had done their research they would know seaweed is no longer recomended. But it's great that they have done one as it proves people are thinking about it and that it is becoming more popular.

You'd get better value buying micronised linseed from charnwood milling and then buying a vit such as metabalance separately.

Don't buy it. Buy in bulk like a proper barefooter :D

Well no, buy it if you want, i am sure in the amounts it won't do any harm, but you want what you are feeding to do some good! :)

Yes you will it's bloody expensive as their supplement but I think it's great that people are thinking about doing this now, actually noticing there's a growing Market

I actually think it's a huge shame that they have decided to market it as a "barefoot" supplement.

As if all feet don't improve with proper nutrition :(

There is NOTHING special about a barefoot diet, it's just a good diet. And for a lot of horses that would NOT include seaweed.

Or buy it and try it and if you like then do the above.

There are a couple of other minerals that are helpful so actually my preference would be to get a hoof targeted blend like the ones at forage plus or progressive earth and add linseed and maybe brewers yeast (or yeasacc), can't remember if they contain the latter

Good point. Well made!

Oops that reminds me. Need some magox.

Calling it a barefoot supplement is purely a marketing ploy, just like coat and skin, veteran etc. supplements. It might well suit some horses but it is not a balancer.

I appreciate the comments. I'm not new to barefoot, I have a horse that had navicular 7 years ago and she has been barefoot and sound for 6 years but hasn't required any special supplements or diet. However as horse no.2 has gone a bit footy 4 weeks after the shoes came off, I know I can help her if I follow the generally accepted feeding/supplementation advice. I take the point about seaweed, and I'll look at some of the alternatives.

By the way, does feeding micronised linseed cause a horse to put on weight, as she doesn't need that?

Linseed is fattening but in the sort of quantities you feed for feet as part of the overall diet it shouldn't be an issue.

Seaweed is high in Iodine which you don't want to overdose on, I feed it atm on the basis of a forage analysis but didn't at my last yard.

I'm moving next week so I'll probably cut it out until I know what the current area is like.

Totally agree.

One question though, why is seaweed now a no no?
