Took my horse hunting on Saturday, and his brushing boots have rubbed his legs. His legs have all swelled up and he is lame, and so sore. He is on bute, but I feel awful that it is my fault that he is in pain. Does anyone have any recommendations for any creams or anything that I could put on the sores on his legs to make them less sore and help them heal?

I feel your guilt, I bandaged my horses leg too tight once and her knee was swollen after a sponsored ride! You learn from these things though and i'm sure no permenant harm will have been done! For soothing and healing I love cut and graze and fairly new product made by chestfields, its a light spray so really easy to apply and you can just spray on a couple of times a day and leave to help heal the damaged areas, i've used it on all sorts of itches, spots and cuts (including on my dog) and it's great.

Sudocrem is excellent, painless to apply and very soothing.

And don't beat yourself up - we all do these things one time or another. I was exercising an endurance horse for a friend and, on his say-so, the horse wore exercise boots. He came home with a boot full of blood and I was devastated. But he survived with no lasting ill effects, and so will your horse.

Luke warm salt water is very soothing and helps to heal. I have used it many a time and its like magic on most cuts etc.

It happens! I felt terrible last year as I booted my horse at home, prior to taking him racing, and his boots rubbed - and all because I was trying to save myself time and angst trying to boot a V excited horse when I got to the course.
I would avoid booting in future for hunting - the boots are often for many hours at a time - mud and gunge gets underneath and causes all sorts of problems. A quick jab of antobiotic will sort your horse out, and all will be well again. We live and learn!
