My retired Forester is living out 24/7 at the moment, been wearing just a standard no-fill shires turnout rug. Obviously I check him every day to make sure he's warm enough etc, and so far he's been dry and happy every day.
My local tack shop had a sale on this weekend so I went there first thing before the yard and I managed to get a medium-light combo turnout rug for £28 - bargain! So off I trundled to the yard in the peeing rain to swap rugs - but got a phone call halfway there that my nan had a bad fall and was taken to hospital, so I made a detour there first.
By the time I got to the yard at about 12.30, found my poor baby boy standing head down, tail to the rain, shuddering and shaking like a mad thing, he was freezing cold and soaking wet under his rug - it had been fine the night before when I checked.
Rushed him into his box, rubbed him down and put his waffle rug on with a thin stable rug on top. Gave him a huge straw bed, plenty of haylage and lots of cuddles.
Sorry this all sounds pointless and rambling but I feel so so soooo guilty! Checked on him just now and he seems none the worse but feel so bad about what could have happened had I been much later
