My retired Forester is living out 24/7 at the moment, been wearing just a standard no-fill shires turnout rug. Obviously I check him every day to make sure he's warm enough etc, and so far he's been dry and happy every day.

My local tack shop had a sale on this weekend so I went there first thing before the yard and I managed to get a medium-light combo turnout rug for £28 - bargain! So off I trundled to the yard in the peeing rain to swap rugs - but got a phone call halfway there that my nan had a bad fall and was taken to hospital, so I made a detour there first.

By the time I got to the yard at about 12.30, found my poor baby boy standing head down, tail to the rain, shuddering and shaking like a mad thing, he was freezing cold and soaking wet under his rug - it had been fine the night before when I checked.

Rushed him into his box, rubbed him down and put his waffle rug on with a thin stable rug on top. Gave him a huge straw bed, plenty of haylage and lots of cuddles.

Sorry this all sounds pointless and rambling but I feel so so soooo guilty! Checked on him just now and he seems none the worse but feel so bad about what could have happened had I been much later :( :(

He is fine now so don't beat yourself up about it any more. A little shivering wont do them any harm after all, you have since given him nice dry and warm rugs etc so don't worry, he wont begrudge you for seeing your nan, I hope she is ok btw

Don't beat yourself up, it's been out-of-the-ordinary weather, you weren't to know his rug would leak in it!
You made him dry and comfortable asap. No need to feel guilty! xx

Wouldnt beat yourself up about it. Everyone has an occasional hiccup! My forester has been out all winter unrugged and came in shivering a few days ago. A cosy stable rug and bundle of haylage and he was fine.

Whats there to feel guilty about anyway! He came in and got pampered!

Don't worry!
Obviously, it would have been better if you'd got to him sooner but just think how bad you would feel if your Nan's fall had been worse and you hadn't got to the hospital in time. Horses have twitch muscles which are there to help them keep warm when they get wet and cold, which was what your horse's muscles were doing. He's warm and dry now so all is well.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your Nan.

3 of ours were shivering tonight, two in lw/mw rugs and one 3yo unrugged. Two rugged ones now have more mw/hw weight rugs on, and 3yo has on his as yet unworn lw.

The old TB was shaking a fair bit, but otherwise was bright as a button and happily eating :)

Thanks guys, feel a bit better now. He's 22 now and I've had him since he was 8 so I'm very protective of the little monster!

Luckily nan is ok, concussed and pretty confused - she is staying for a few days observation and then hopefully can go home :) xx

Don't worry, lots of horses far worse off, and he is ine. Your nan comes first. You have nothing to feel guilty about.

Agree with everyone else, and at least you had a rug to fit unlike when poor little Megan needed a warm up and we didn't have one small enough :D
