Thye mean the horse somehow managed to stay the right way up, as if he had an extra leg to put to the ground.
Esp when jumping, and it looks like a fall is inevitable.
a fifth leg normally means the horse finds a way of getting itself over a jump even if it was on the wrong stride, took off of badly but got over. Somehow always seems to find its balance/stride. A really gutsy, clever animal who thinks for himself and has a huge sense of self preservation.
in the case of my friends horse the fifth leg was as a result of him being a Rig. It would appear at the most inopportune moments, fully erect like a stallion and waving around for everyone to see. a definite fifth leg.

I'll go with both of those.
My Welshies have a fifth leg which always gets them to the other side of a jump the right way up and un-injured no matter how they are presented whilst my neighbours Shettie whilst very underendowed in the leg department seems to have a full sized horse's willy which I swear he can touch the ground with and often looks as though he has five legs!.
