Before anyone starts reading, please beware that this is an 'I'm feeling sorry for myself' post
Ellie and I went to our first fun ride of the year today. I was so excited - after her injuries a couple of weeks ago I was hoping and praying she'd be ok, and after riding her out gently for the past week, we made the decision that she'd be fine to do the ride nice and steadily. But it wasnt to be...we got her off the trailer and took off her boots, only to find that she had a really puffy hindleg
We're not sure what the cause could be - it could be a knock on from our accident, or she could have knocked it whilst getting excited about going out earlier. All I know is, I was pretty gutted
But of course wouldnt have dreamed of taking any risks with her - I'd never have forgiven myself if I'd gone ahead and come back with a lame horse
It just seems like everything is against us at the moment. I've had Ellie ten years, and up until last March, the only issue we had ever had with her was a little series of nosebleeds. No lameness, and no days off, not even when we were out showjumping three times a week. Then, last Spring she threw both front splints whilst mucking around in the field. She recovered well from that, only to be kicked in the field in September - we thought we'd lost her. She had to have about 2 months off, and we moved yards so she could have her own turnout. Two weeks after moving, she came in from the field having somehow torn open her foreleg. The wound then got all infected - more time off. Things havent been too bad since Christmas, but then two weeks ago we had a coming together with a concrete lorry....and now today. Goodness knows what she's done - we turned her out when we got back, and I'm going back up the yard in a bit to put an ice boot on the leg. Obviously if it doesnt go down in the next couple of days, we'll have to get the vet out again...
I know things could be a lot worse, but I'm just feeling a bit down about things. All I want to do is hack, and go on some nice fun rides, but the odds seem stacked against us at the moment.
