Girl who I asked to ride and school my nervy pony came off on Monday when she spooked and took off, she slammed the brakes on at the fence and she came off and landed on it. Hurt her back but I thought she was ok but found out today she went to hospital last night and has fractured her back and may need an op.
I feel so guilty, I have had a hairline fracture of the spine and had to stop riding for a yr, really worried she will be the same or worse, to make matters worse her younger sister came off someone else on the yards pony a few weeks ago and broke her leg and needed it pinned, now their poor parent have both badly hurt by other peoples ponies.

Eeek - I guess she knew the risks before getting on?

These things happen with horses, but are you covered insurance wise? Just in case parents decide to come after you?

I do not think they would, they are lovely people and they have ponies on the same yard and have told me to stop feeling guilty as it happens, but I still feel awful.

It's difficult not to feel guilty - I had a sharer come of my horse and ended up with a compound fracture of both lowerbones in one leg, in plaster and off work (not earning) for more than six months and it was 18 months before she was signed off by the hospital. She'd been riding and competing him for 2 years without issue previous to this - I have eventually come to accept it really is just one of those things.
We are still friends and I still feel guity - it's human to feel responsible for what your animals do - even if it just part of the risk you take getting out of bed in the morning.

Horses will be horses and accidents will happen (unless you never leave your bed!)
