There is an elderly retired mare at my yard, she can literately hardly walk due to a front tendon injury, which after 2 weeks is still red hot and quite swollen. It's 2 weeks since she did it apparently, but she was lame before that with some other tendon injury, so I think she's just making the same injury worse and worse.

Owner doesn't want to pay to have her scanned/get the vet because they don't see the point, which I can understand understand, but she looks like she needs something doing, one way or the other if you know what I mean.

I don't like to interfere and probably won't! But I just wondered of other people would say anything?

If the horse is lame and has been for that length of time/longer? Then it needs to see a vet one way or another, retired horse or not I'm afraid......

I am not sure I'd bother getting a retired mare scanned either - for a few reasons. Firstly, a scan is only diagnostic, it doesn't help healing at all. Secondly, the mare may need to go to a vet clinic to get one done (if the vet doesn't have a mobile scanner) which would increase stress and pain on the journey. Thirdly, it's a lot of expense for a retired horse.
I would however, suggest some form of pain management might be appropriate while the mare's leg heals, along with tendon support and appropriately controlled exercise.

Like I said it's understandable. They want to keep her out because she goes a bit crazy if you keep her in, but they are all a bit crazy in her field and do a fair bit of razzing around! Not sure how it's ever going to heal TBH!

Maybe they are just letting her have a bit of spring grass before "it's time".
