Where are you? This morning the roads and pavements were sooooooooooooooooooo slippy this afternoon well 1/2 hour ago went to fetch him in and his field is about clear little still on pavements but he didn't slip once bringing him in.
They're in the right place then! I know, it is such a horrible time of year.
My boy has been on box rest for three weeks and is looking so depressed... oh, and now it is raining...
Chin up, shortest day has been and gone and it is downhill to summer from here
Yes mine are the same! the fields arent that bad but getting them to the fields is just too risky on this ice!! I think alot of people are in the same situation at the minute. Fingers crossed that the ice melts soon!
Im having withdraw symptoms not riding too, we are just on the Welsh boarder and yard dosent get much sun, hope it dosent rain tonight, I just cant risk getting them out, fields are still rock hard too
We have been quick lucky that ours have been out every day for 1.5 to 2 hours around lunchtime. But we had to shovel all the snow/ice off the yard a number of times so that we could get them out of the stables/yard to start with. Have to go down a slope to the fields but although covered in snow/ice has had the sun on it to soften the mud/ice enough to be able to walk over it very carefully by lunchtime. Still pretty hairy walking on it though and lower back is killing me from shovelling all the snow!!
would need an ice pick to break the ice here melts a bit and then just freezes, having to lug water from the top yard to bottom yard too, bet we all will all have bad backs and long arms, lol by the time it thaws
Ours have now been in for 10 days. Was hoping to get them out today into the menege for a stretch but when we went out to check, found what must have been a very large puddle which was covered in about a foot deep of ice and we couldn't break it. Ended up getting a pick axe to it. So we've left them in again today and praying we can get them out tomorrow. For the past 10 days we've mucked out straight onto the yard so just imagine how much muck we eventually will have to pick up. Still, rather have safety over appearance any day. Can't take the risk with the heavily pregnant mares nor the youngsters and would hate for the old veterans (28 years plus) slipping over.
Thankfully every one of them seems okay about the situation thank goodness but it's murder trying to muck out twice a day when they all try to help. It's either noses going through pockets to sniff out polos or faces coming up to us for a cuddle and rub.
At least its not as cold out there now so fingers crossed it stays like that for at least a few days.
Ours are stuck in too, we can get them in the school for a leg stretch but even thats frozen now and after a week in, they are all getting a bit giddy. We will now have to wait for the ground to thaw until we put them out again as they will def leg it about after being in for so long.
Lucky my lot I've been turning them out in to small paddocks, which they've trashed, show them snow and they think they are on a ski holiday. At lest my summer grazing paddocks are untouched and will reseed these paddocks come the spring and rest them till next winter.
Mine live out all year as I am at a very good yard that allows it. My Warmblood was in last winter as I was at a different yard. He is a totally different horse this year.
my boy was in for 4 days....i managed to turn him out yesterday. We had to walk through one field to get to theirs but i couldn't hang on to him so unhooked the rope and he went nuts...bucking and broncking, galloping flat out. He just wouldn't calm down and it ended up with him falling over....omg...it was horrible, thankfully he was ok and doesn't seem to have any issues from it but it was really really awful
i think they are much better going out at least a little bit every day.....god i hate this weather
i love the fact i have to very hardy natives, they were out in it all & apart from showing off the the cute mare that rode past (i think she was nuts riding on the icey road but each to their own) showed no sign 's of being silly at all.
friends TB on the other hand is walking the walls now as they cant get her out due to ice on walkways (i really dont want to be around for that explosion!)
ours have been out every day, we only have a very small amout of concrete at the front of the stables that we have mucked out on to and the rest is just hardcore so although frozen in places not an all round skating rink
. By boxing to the beach (bus route so gritted) they only had 3 days off ridden. Down the road they have been in for the last 2 weeks. Been hacking down the main road (gritted) tried to go the other way yesterday but had to turn back.
Well we finally got our lot out this morning (two at a time into the menage) and considering they've been in for 11 days were absolutely brilliant. They all (except the last two who are the "nutters" plodded out as good as gold and once let off, just walked to the piles of haylage we'd left out for them. Even when the weanling and yearlings went out, no bother from them either.
The two "nutters" were the two we knew we would have problems with, because even if they go out every day, their daily antics are always the same - jog out, spin round, and once through the gate and let off - then they try to see who can rear and walk backwards on two legs the highest and the longest, and then who can do the biggest buck - they didn't let us down today either.
And considering they are all TBs, and half of them have been in work on the horsewalker leading up to the bad weather, we were thrilled with them all. Bet they won't be like it tomorrow though!
