Feel such a bad mother

My yard is just pure ice and this morning my poor little yearling slipped over. There was nothing I could do to steady her. The horses had been in yesterday because of the snow, so turning out this morning they were excited. The big ones were sensible and fine, but my little arab yearling had a really nasty crash.

I dont want this to happen again - what can I put down to sort the slippey yard out? Suggestions please

We always used to spread muck or bedding from the stable door to the field gate. Doesn't look pretty but can stop slipping until the frosts are over.

We put grit down.

Salt! Ordinary dishwasher salt is fine - we just sprinkle it on, much easier than putting muck down which gets into a real mess.

I have a path of dirty shavings down, looks horrid but prevents slips

When my horses stayed in last year we emptied the wheelbarrows on the yard after mucking out.

Buy salt in sacks from local hardware/diy store - much cheaper and grittier than standard salt (although normal salt does work if it's all you can get your hands on)

Rock salt or grit, this is readily available.

Muck out onto the yard. Its not nice to look at and can get a bit pongy but it works. Mairi.

Hehe...did that today as it's just dangerous right now!Made a nice 'path' of straw down to the field so atleast I won't go base over apex next time I put the pony out
