I haven't ridden for weeks as the weather has been vile and feeling a bit low, as well as working hard at work. Jazzy has also lost a front shoe so he's out of action until he's reshod but I woke up this morning and wanted to ride so . . . My 13hh 20 year old was the chosen one!!!

Brushed him off (he lives out, unrugged and unclipped) and tacked him up - he kept looking at me as if to say "Seriously? You have a 17.2hh to ride!!!" and got on him. He's instant response to me pushing him forwards away from the mouthful of hard feed he had found was head on the floor, buck and jump sideways. OH looked at me and said "are you sure about this?" Mouses proceeded to jog down the field track and took exception to the log pile at the end of the lane that he hadn't seen before. Got onto the road and had to trot on to get out of the way of a queue of cars then walked through the floods on the roads. Still hadn't decided whether to do the very short ride or a slightly longer one but I clicked my tongue and had a trot on the road, which turned into a canter (no traffic coming) and I just remember laughing out loud a lot!

Turned to go along the very short route (he's not very fit and he was carrying me :o) to which he decided that warranted broncing and cantering sideways with his chin on his chest (with no rein contact) and grunting loudly. Two little children from a nearby house came out to say hello and just started laughing at the mad pony and his mad rider who was still laughing. Made sure I still had control by stopping him at a junction (despite there being no cars coming) and walks him on home.

Was suuuuuuch a good feeling to get out again. Mouse is such a cool little pony and I love him to bits. He was clearly sooooo happy to be out of the quagmire for a bit. Maybe a slightly calmer ride tomorrow. Might even take the other 13 hander out tomorrow. Will be odd to ride Jazzy out next time!

P.S. I'm really not feeling guilty about riding Mouse - he was clearly loving it, and thoroughly enjoyed his little gallop up the field track back up to the stables. He even earned a handful of chaff for going out!!

This is the incentive I need to get back down to 11 stone again!!!

love getting back on the old ponies, however looking at your pony, doesnt look like he would struggle with the weight at all and by the sounds of things loved getting out. The cantering on the road intrigued me and prompted me to ask about it as i have always been taught not to. had mixed and interesting reponses. it cant always be helped though but im getting the feeling its not as taboo as ive always thought lol

Love seeing older ponies/horses doing a bit and enjoying it. my old lad competed till he was 20 and was still loving it

can't beat a good pony squish, sounds like you both enjoyed it :D

Thanks :) was sooooo nice just to be riding again. I love that pony sooooo much - I've had him since he was 6 months old and know him inside out. He thoroughly enjoyed being out too - he can be tricky to hack out on his own but he went without any problems - apart from away from the scrap of food that he found! Was a 20 minute ride which has made me feel sooooooo much better :)

Lol it's fine - no worries! It's not a habit I have, especially when riding Sir Tripalot - I have major concerns about cantering him on grass so to actually hit canter with no fear of ending up on my arse again is a major bonus!!

We had a canter/gallop up the field track (grass) when we got back as well but he's not very fit anymore so didn't want to overdo it. I'm 15 and a half stone at the moment and do worry but next year it's going to be different. My OH lost 6 stone in 6 months last year and he's going to help me :)

Aww i need to get back in the saddle to cheer myself up as well then it seems!

Wow! 6 stone in that time. inspiring! help me too please lol

Our Eriskay is 17 next year and shows little sign of slowing up yet. She sounds pretty much like Mouse, she can be a bit of a handful but she does stop and she's just so much fun.

Aww it sounds like you and Mouse had a wonderful time, I have a beautiful 16-hander but really do miss riding ponies sometimes; a friend of my mum's has recently asked me to ride her 17 y/o 13hh mare whilst she recovers from shoulder surgery and I jumped at the chance! I'm 5'5 and 9 stone so should be okay on a stocky little new forest!

Oh you'd be more than ok!! I do ride very lightly and only ride him if he's in one of his jig-jog moods - he's oblivious to most things then!!

Mistlekins - mouse will be 20 in April and doesn't look like he's going to slow down anytime soon. He'll live forever just to spite me ;)

I think you should have a serious think about whether your 13hh, unfit, veteran is truly comfortable carrying 15 1/2 stone at a gallop.

I'm afraid I wouldn't let someone that weight on my 16.1 ISH. :o

I'm afraid I agree with puppy. I wouldn't be comfortable with someone that size just sat on a 13hh. Riding light just means you don't feel heavier than you actually are, it doesn't make you any lighter than you are.

It's surprising what stocky little beasts are capable of. I'm no lightweight and mine's been carrying me for many miles for 20 years now and he's still fit as a flea and quite happy to do 15 mile rides. Even at 24 he will hold his own out with anyone and neither his back nor his legs are showing signs of age or wear. We must have done thousands of miles together over the years.

Smaller ponies are the best! I used to ride a little grey 12.2 called George, stocky little thing who liked going sideways - so fun to ride though! I'd choose a older pony with character over a sensible horse anyday. Not that I don't love both!
Sometimes I wish my 15.1 was 13 hands...:p
