My boys shoes got taken off on Tuesday for the winter, various reasons including sidebone on X-rays and just generally to harden out his feet and grow out old nail holes (and also hell of a lot cheaper for me)
Anyway I did the same with my other horse through summer so I had a rough idea of how they would feel (she felt almost lame the first time I rode her but my farrier had advised it was just probably because her feet were sensitive if you like after having the shoes off) to note my mare only ever had 2 fronts so was never shod behind, my gelding that’s just had his off had 4 shoes on.
Anyway I rode my boy the day he got his shoes off, tbh not really thinking much of it, rode in the school so a sand surface and he didn’t feel right not that he felt lame but just not right however the more we went the better he felt anyway he then had 2 days off fast forward to today, rode him tonight and again just felt off/mildly lame. Watched videos of him and he looks absolutely fine but something was telling me he didn’t feel right.
Now my question is I presume he is feeling this way due to shoes coming off as he was fine the day before when the shoes were still on. Should I persevere as I presume it’s just because his frog is low(?) from having them off or should I get the shoes back on! I don’t know if I’m being dramatic or not 🙈

it will take a while for his feet to transition to barefoot after wearing shoes - I would cove him a good 6-8 weeks depending on how long he’s been wearing shoes for. It’s very much about riding the horse according to what they are comfortable doing when they are barefoot as opposed to what you want to do.

Thank you! I didn’t realise quite the transition, maybe that was naive of me but I presumed since it was a surface it would feel no different… naive of me looking back now.
I will keep that in mind, I think because my mare was easy peasy felt normally basically the day after I expected him to be the same

He is probably foot sore aka in pain. Either get some hoof boots or give him time off till his feet have adapted. If he's sore on all for feet he won't look lame as it's hard to limp on all 4 legs, but he would most likely feel "off"

In both cases I'd consider some pain relief till your sure he's no longer foot sore.

Thank you! I gave a dannilon last night but wasn’t sure if that was overkill so that’s ok I’ll continue with that.
That makes sense tho thank you!
