Just had vet back out to Haddy as he hasn't improved since Saturday. Still can't put his head down and is quite stiff and wobbly. Temp ceeping up although not high as yet. Vet is mystified. So he is now on steroids to see if they improve him.
He is still quite bright and happy to munch hay and will eat some feed. I have been chief grass picker for him which he seems to enjoy for a while and then he goes back to hs hay!!
We are giving him til Thurs and then will have to make the decision we all dread.
I have had him 28 years and just can't bear to think of losing him but I owe it to him not to put him through any more. Please keep all your bits and pieces crossed for him.
Thanks guys. J x

My fingers are well & truely crossed for you, i know exactly how your feeling as im going through similar with my old boy.
I havent had him as long as you only 23 years but im absolutely dreading whats coming.

(((((hugs to you)))))

Oh Dressagecrazy I had to smile at your comment "only 23 years". We have to think ourselves lucky to have had so long with them don't we? I don't know what your situation is but hope things work out for you both.
Hadleigh has just had his first dose of steroids and I have left him munching on a small feed. He vexes me as he looks so well most of the time, this waiting is the worst thing!

I know i do feel very lucky, mine's 25yo but i always had the idea he would live into his 30's sadly it's not meant to be where just hoping he can enjoy a few more months with the yummy grass.
It is awful to have to make these decisions & like you mine also looks the picture of health glossy coat, alert & still being a bugger lol but his poor legs & neck are failing him fast.

Good luck with the steriods i really hope they work or at least help make good improvements.

These horses really know how to break our hearts.

Well, sounds like he has a virus to me - when ours got strep. zooepidemicus they went VERY stiff necked, off their feeds and high temps.

Have you got a really, really good dentist for him? Might be worth giving them a call.

Stick with him, if you feel he's not suffering a downward spiral. The steroids should send him quickly back to normal if it's an illness he has.

My fingers are very crossed for you both - and have a tissue xxx

Brighteyes what's the connection with the dentist? The vet checked his teeth and they are pretty much OK. Don't like to fiddle with them too much due to his age. although obviously have them checked regualrly.
Really hope you are right abot the steroids!!

Just in case the dentist has any suggestions about feed or anything which might be contributing to his discomfort, that's all.

Elderly horses and ponies need TLC and as most (if not all) have enlarged pituitaries, all sorts of complications arising from the effects may occur. Could be linked with that?

So sad for you, hopefully the steroids will help and he will start to feel better very soon! Just have to say what a lucky horse to have had you for 28 yrs, so many people chuck horses away when they are no longer able to work to the level required! I am always inspired and lifted to hearwhen people have had their horses for life! Lucky lucky boy! X x everything crossed for you

Fingers crossed for you both((((vibes)))). but if things don't go how you want you will be strong and do the right thing by him. Like the rest thinking about you.

As always the support on this forum is overwhelming. Thanks guys it means a lot when you're having a tough time.
As for Hads well, I think he was walking a bit better today. Still can't put his head down to graze but eating well. His temperature is back down to normal as well. I won't give up on him until I have to.
We had a little wander around the bottom paddock a couple of times today. I pulled the grass and he ate it, we make quite a team!!
