I feel awful tonight after taking my mare out jumping today at a local show. She jumped really well there two weeks ago and we took her back today hoping for the same results. A light rain came in for about tens mins but it was enough to make the ground geasy and my mare ended up slipping when taking off into a wall and ended up refusing as she lost her footing. As she is on a 6yo this knocked her confidence and she then refused to jump the wall on the second and third attempt. I jumped a practice fence after leaving the arena but now I feel awful for not pulling out of the class as soon as it started to rain. I feel like I have done more damage than good - young horses are so impressionable and it doesn't take much to knock their confidence.

I'm sure she will soon get her confidence back, and one thing is for certain, you won't make that mistake again, so don't be too hard on yourself.

just make sure the next few times u jump her , the ground is good and the jumps are v small to get her confidence back, wouldnt worry 2 much - u know why she stopped so u can prevent it in the futrure

I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago. I was schooling my boy round the show jumps at a local yard and he went to stop at the second part of the double. The ground was still dewey cos it was early morning and his front legs went from under him and he ended up on his side on top of the poles.
I got back on and he jumped ok, then i got the physio out and he had pulled the muscles in one side of his wither. He seems fine now and came 7th at west wilts intro on saturday.
Its a mistake i wont make again. Just a shame he had to have a crash like that.
