Ive got my x-country lesson with Polly Stockton next week and its going to take about 4-5 hours to get there.

My Dad doesnt think I should go, because its too much to ask of Archie to travel all that way, jump, then travel back.

Opinions please?

Sorry, but I tend to agree with your Dad, 5 hours there for a lesson & then 5 hours back.... I wouldn't travel that far for a lesson, it's long, it's tiring & I doubt if you horse will feel up to much after all that travel.

Even if overnight accomodation is sorted out for ytou & your horse I still thinks it's too far. It's your call obviously but...

Isn't there someone nearer who can give you a lesson?

Why not ask if she has a schoolmaster you can ride? I know its not the same as taking your own horse, but at least you would get the lesson. Just a thought

what about contacting Polly and asking her advice. After all, if your horse is fit enough to XC atm and therefore fit enough for a demaning lesson then ask her advice. She will be used to travelling her horses all over the country to compete

Another idea would be to ask her if she is going to be closer to you running a clinic in the future so that you could have your lesson with her at that clinic. Lots of top riders do clinics

This sounds like a wonderful opportunity. I've travelled a mare and foal to a grading half way across the country (about 7 hrs in total) with a stable to rest in for about 6 hours in between the trips there and back. Neither of them had any ill effects whatsoever.

It depends a bit on the horse, I would suspect. If it travels well and is used to competing when it comes off then it should be able to cope, although I agree if it's not used to long trips it might be a bit to ask.

That said, in other, larger countries it's not all that unusual for horses to travel that long to shows/lessons/clinics and then back home again the same day. I've certiainly shipped horses 3hrs+, evented, and then shipped home again the same day.

Thanks everyone for your advise. Ive looked in to staying some where over night, but I cant really afford it.

My horse is only 6, and although he is very fit, Im just so unsure, I dont want him falling over the trailer on the way back coz he too tired.

And I wont be able to use on of Pollys horses, because this is for a feature in a magazine and they want my horse!!!
