I have a youngster arriving tomorrow, and therefore at some point the two hill ponies yearlings we have as companions will become surplus to requirements. They are on loan to us through one of the Dartmoor hill pony societies, but the owner has said he doesn't want them back and they can go directly to Tavistock market for the dartmoor pony sale. I'm just feeling a bit sorry for them, they are like brothers in the field, playing, sleeping and cantering around together and are so sweet to be around. So a bit of a pointless post, but please send up a few good vibes for M&M (apparently a dealer named them after handbags as they have good coat patterns - I'm not joking) aka Spot and Patch, to get a good home next Friday.

Have you spoken with the Dartmoor hill pony society that you loaned them via - is there nothing they can do to help???

Sally, the owner has told the society he doesn't want them back, and has suggested that they go to the sale - it his decision to get rid of them. I am shamelessly pushing them on my FB page in the hope that one of my friends will take them on!

They are sweet and friendly, and look fat and well at the moment, so hopefully they will stand out at the sale for all the right reasons.

even though its not your fault there is no way i could send 2 ponies i had been looking after to a sale; they look so sweet and happy!

i must be getting soft in my old age
 
Could you go to the sale and if you see them going for meat or not sold then bid on them yourself? You would then get them very cheap, and could sell them on better yourself privately even if only for the same amount if you have your own land and it doesnt cost you much to keep? Or make an offer to the owner for them?

I guess not or you would of already thought of that but just a suggestion if you hadn't

I doubt they will go for meat, as yearlings, gelded and already passported, and friendly little souls I would expect them to go for kids, although they would make a cracking driving pair!

Although I feel bad about it, they were never mine, and they would always have been sold, we had a filly from the same society who left us as a three year old and was sold privately to a family in north devon, so fingers crossed these boys will have the same luck!

Oooh well best of luck to them I am sure you are right in that case they will prob end up in a nice home, they look a smashing pair. I will keep my fingers crossed for them and also an ear out for homes, I am in Devon too.

I have no idea what sort of money they should make, I haven't looked at the auction reports for Chagford or Tavistock earlier this winter, it just depends who's there on the day, and how much they're prepared to pay. I don't even know who the owner is, although I can put anyone interested in touch with the society who organised them coming to me. As for size, I'm 5'4" and they're about waist height on me (sorry, rubbish on small pony sizes!) and I would assume they're 18 months old, so they'll grow another 4-6 inches I guess?
 
How very sad for these youngsters, from the reports I have heard of auctions recently I would not be confident of a happy outcome. What a shame that some stupid people have got JM07 banned again, these 2 sound like prime candidates for her help.

please dont feel guilty they have had such a great time with you and you have given them a really good start in life and they will go on to be wonderful. Spot is going to live with a lady who restores rocking horses, she spent ages with him on thursday evening. Patch has fallen in love with a little filly i brought back for the spuds programme,so hopefully he wont find it to traumatic when his friend goes next week. i bought 10 babies home with me and will collect 10 more i have asked for once these are tame. What a nightmare i just wanted to bring them all home. thank you once again though.
