Well I discovered where the swelling was coming from, and feeling more than a little guilty about this.

My horse has a sort of "mud fever" condition in the fold of the skin just behind his elbow right at the top of his off-fore. There is a long crack in his skin and a couple of spots on his elbow. So I was right when I thought there was something like a rub from some mud - like a girth gall, but not a girth gall as it is too far forward - but I hadn't realised the extent.

Poor horse. He doesn't seem too bothered and I have put on some Equine America Fungatrol cream, which smells nice and has always cleared up any case of mud fever very quickly.

This is a lesson in being more particular about grooming, etc.
It has only come on in the last few days, perhaps I didn't give him a good enough groom after the last lesson when he was hot and sweaty.

Dont beat yourself up. The area of the elbow is easy to miss and its easy to say with hindsight that you should've groomed there etc!! He may've scratched it on a bush. If its any consolation, my YO and friend noticed that my horse had pus oozing from a cracked fold of skin in the same place, just inside his elbow. I hadn't noticed! Out popped a thorn when I checked it so had to apply hot fomentations to draw out the rest of the rubbish and pack the hole with wound puffer! We all lead busy lives, with work, college, uni whatever, and this flipping wet miserable weather doesn't help!
