I haven't ridden my horse yet this week.

I had a lesson this morning but used a different horse for it and by the end of the lesson we had been worked so hard I was too tired to go out for my planned hack.

I do intend to go on a nice long hack tomorrow morning maybe an hour and a half to 2 hours.

Am I being unfair on her? She is 17 with arthritis and is in foal.

She'll be fine

Mine has been off for about 5 weeks now as ive just not had the time with organising the move and other stuff

The thing to do is try and keep things consistent, so go easy on her tomorrow

Don't worry about it! This time of year can be hard

April's 22 ish and only ridden at the weekends as I work in London Mon-Fri. As a result I am her novelty person who provides fun and a change

Arthritic horses should be worked frequently, though, so don't make a habit of it or you could aggravate the circs. As long as she has enough turnout, she should be ok.

One of the old horses at our yard was arthritic and it was better to have him in work 'little and often' rather than nothing then overdoing it.
Hopefully you will still have some turnout. Ours have been in twice this week because of the bad weather though

I feel better now. The young girls at the yard seemt o think i'm horrible for not riding her.

I was just going to go for a walk. I'm not really one for cantering about without the safety of the school

She is out 24/7. I have just been having to do a lot of coursework and catching up on my degree this week.

Next week I intend to ride her at least 3 nights during the week.

I dont think its so much working them frequently as ensuring they move about plenty and keeping work consistent. Not riding all week and then bombing around would, for example, like aggrevate arthritis (i know you've said you arent intending on this btw original poster!

I used to be liveried with someone who's horse was arthritic and had navicular and she struggled to ride all week so would "make up for it" by working her hard at the weekend. She also never saw how lame that poor horse was :/

If shes out and mooching around, im sure she'll be fine. Its standing about thats not so good for them.

That's why I didn't ride her in the lesson today because our instructor works us hard and i didn't think that she was up to it. I wasn't however expecting our instructor to work us quite as hard as she did.

I could barely dismount and my legs still feel like jelly and I have been home for 2 hours !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You wrote that she was in foal
When is the foal due?
I don't think I'd put a mare in foal in lessons at this stage, just walk hacks, then stop all work for the last couple of months, esp with carrying the wieght of the foal and her arthitus.

She is due July/August and will be stopping work completely at the end of April. I loan her through the riding school and I won't be using her for lessons just hacking.
