The sun was shining this morning so I removed my mare and the other mare she shares the field with rugs! They are both un clipped and thought they would enjoy the sun on their backs :)! We then had torrential rain this evening and they are both soaked through!! The other horses owner got there this evening to sort them out as i was at work! She sent me a text saying girls are too wet to rug! Meant to drop to 3 tonight and she'll sort her own horse in the morning! Whoops!! I'm feeling guilty now as have 2 wet, cold horses and a unhappy owner :( x

modern rugs should be breathable enough for them to have rugs on. Its worse for them to be wet and cold, as they wont dry quickly in this weather, than it is to put the rugs on them x

I know that they are expensive but if you keep an eye out (on ebay etc...) for a Bucas Smertex Rain at a reduced price, it is well worth getting one. You can put them on a much wetter horse than you can with a normal breathable rug. :)

Not meaning to be rude but if you took my horses rug off without permission I wouldn't be happy at all particularly if she then got soaked.

Someone did this to my horse once and certainly never did it again after the telling off they got.

It was only 4 degrees at 3pm this afternoon where I live and was down to 2 degrees at 7pm. My horse is already double rugged day and night with full neck on and she isnt clipped yet.

In the future it may be wiser to ask her permission before you alter your friends horses rug particularly as she will be at risk of catching a chill now.

 I'm glad I don't share a field with you! They're HORSES and (especially when not clipped) are designed to cope with crappy weather!

OP - I would have thanked you for considering my horse and shrugged that the weather took a turn for the worse. That's life. The others are right: with modern breathable rugs, you can rug up when wet, no worries!:)

I wouldn't worry, but tbh I have always put rugs onto wet horses (and used to when I was a kid in the days of heavy canvas rugs  ) and they have always been fine. They dry from the inside ime.

:)

Thanks everyone for your replies.
flaxen- fair point as our horses share a field the other horses owner and me split the chores between us rugs off/on, feeding, poo picking etc! I understand why she us upset but I mid judged the weather :(

Mine too is out tonight without a rug after he got soaked in the rain today. I prefer to leave him without a rug rather than rug him when he's wet. It's an individual choice I think and neither answer is right or wrong. I wouldn't worry about it too much. You got caught out by the weather. It happens to us all. :)

Well I'm the other side of the coin!

Share a yard with a friend and we take it in turns to do the horses. This morning she took the rugs off both my horses, one grey and one chaser clipped, and her own horse.

Like everyone else she couldn't predict how the weather would turn and I ended up this evening with 3 soggy horses, one very muddy as well.

I simply shoved their cooler rugs on under LW turnouts as they are still living out, left them a couple of hours whilst visiting a relative in hospital and took the wet rugs off and changed for dry ones on my way home.

Yes it was a bit of a pain but nothing which couldn't be fairly easily solved. Had I not been able to pop back tonight my friend would have gone and changed rugs over.

As other have said not sure why she didn't rug tonight.

When the days are dry we like to get their rugs off while it is warm enough so they can have a good groom, scratch etc.
