So my daughter was happily schooling her pony tonight.... Got a little unbalanced on a corner in canter and took a tumble out the side door ... Didn't seem a bad fall- she's certainly had worse.

As she complained of pain in her arm - and she's not a complainer!- I decided a trip to a and e may be best... The upshot is she has an impaction fracture of the humerus :( 4 weeks in a heavy duty sling and no riding for this time.

I feel so guilty for her falling... I feel like I should of stopped it somehow :(

Her and the new pony were just starting to really gel and come together as a team... My daughter found confidence she never knew she had!

I sooo hope this hasn't set her back or shaken her confidence and pleasure of riding ...4 weeks is a longtime

Bit of a pointless post really... Just feeling low :(

Aw I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. Hugs!

There was nothing you could have done though, all of us fall off sometime. How old is she? I broke my arm after a fall when I was 14. Thankfully it didn't set me back. After 6 weeks I was back on. I'm sure she'll be the same xx

I know how you feel OP.... 2 years ago I took my daughter abroad on a riding holiday and she fell off and broke her arm. She says it was my fault because I tried to stop her bolting horse and it was when he stopped that she fell off. It does feel awful as a mum, you feel its your job to keep them safe. But it is part of life and learning for them and you just have to be there for them as they recover and assimilate the lessons.

I expect your daughter will be just as keen as before once her arm has healed - they are very resilient, far better than us grown ups.

Hugs, and be kind to yourself. It wasnt your fault and you just need to give your daughter lots of sensible but not too molly coddling support now. x x

Thank you for your kind words- my daughters 10 yrs old. She's already asked if she can still groom etc... So fingers crossed x

Falling off is part of riding, and sometimes you get hurt. Hope your daughter heals well and is still keen to ride. Don't feel bad; stuff happens.

I'm sure it won't knock her confidence too much, at that age they can bounce back from anything. I was strapped to a spinal board for 12 hours and was back on my naughty pony within a week at the age of 14! You have to remember that there's nothing you can do, these things happen and they'll make her a stronger person in the future. They do say you have to fall off 7 times before you're a proper rider, after all. It's a lot better for her to have slid off around a corner in a safe, controlled environment than been bucked off out on a hack or over a jump so don't feel too bad about it.

Dont feel guilty my granddaughter broke her arm at school doing cartwheels so they will get into trouble no matter how much you protect them

Oh please don't feel guilty. As you said, she has had worse falls it just happens that this one she was a bit unlucky. Four weeks will fly by.
My son fell off at a walk and broke his collarbone when he was 5 - still to this day I don't know how he managed it. Being young though he healed within a few weeks.

I stupidly let my eight-year-old ride a 16.2hh in outdoor manege at a slow trot. Horse did little spook, he fell off and smacked hard into fence. I still feel guilty to this day (nine years later). He was unhurt.
Couple of years ago, he was knocked down stairs at his friend's house by an over-enthusiastic dog and broke his collar bone.
Point I'm trying to make is we can't protect them 24/7, much as we want to. Sometimes the worst accidents are when you are doing something quite ordinary like walking downstairs.
Do hope your daughter recovers soon.

So far this football season my son has broken a Finger and dislocated a shoulder, cricket season starts shortly, he's got one finger that won't straighten hes broken that 3 times playing cricket, one of those times was by his father throwing the ball...oops, Your daughter was unlucky, she'll mend quickly, in a few weeks she'll have forgotten the incident and be raring to get back in the saddle! We all feel like this especially when we've gone to A&E a bit begrudgingly lol
