Its not easy. My daughter's pony died of grass sickness just after Christmas. It was very sudden and there was no warning. She was only 3 at the time and all I could do was explain that he was very very ill and while we did all we could we couldn't save him. She cried for a while but she did get over it. She got a new pony quite soon after (by chance, we were in the right place and the right time) and he has helped her get over it.
