Our 10 month old colt is getting his 'bits' cut out tomorrow :(

We've been tempted to leave him entire, but it's just not practical at the moment.

I feel really nervous about it for some reason; suppose it's because a 'member of my family' is having a op. Think I'm going to feel guilty tomorrow afterwards. Poor little thing will have no clue what's going on.

The vet has to do him laying down cause they're a bit on the small side; all dropped ok but the size of peas.

Think I'd feel better about it if he was difficult to handle, but he's not, he's an angle (most of the time) - but he's starting to have those un-cut male tendencies, and not just towards the girlies either :$

Aw bless you both, good luck 2moz, sure it will go smoothly and will be a relief once its done, he will soon be over it all, its not normally too major at all they soon wander off and carry on regardless x

I'm sure he'll be fine, and you'll be forgiven soon! Sounds like you've made the right decision so don't feel guilty, and try not to worry, this is a very regular procedure for horse vets, he'll be in safe hands.

Good luck :)

Honestly hun i am sure he will be fine! my only advice would be to keep checking him. Our vet said to complete last check at 6pm but I usually go down about 10-11 too. Had a 'funny' feeling so went to check him at 9pm and he had a prolapse , only way to describe it was his insides kinda came out the wound (looked like fat) right down to his hocks!! was awful shock and called vet out straight away. He cut the tissue off and Bailey had to have lots of anti botics etc. He was sorry for himself for a few days but has had no negative effects since.
Apparently if I hadnt of checked him the vet said he would of died.

Everything went ok, vet left and told us to watch the bleeding. He was fine, we left at 2pm, a friend checked on him at 3pm and he was fine and then we went back in just after 4pm and there was blood everywhere and a constant drip drip drip drip drip....

Called the vet, they come straight out, but by the time they arrived it had stopped again. They think he just dislodged a clot. They said it was nothing to worry about unless there was a constant stream of blood, any amount of dripping is fine.

He's slow getting back to his normal self, although still the odd dripping here and there, but the swelling is going down nicely. (he wasn't impressed with us running the hose gently over it last night lol but it helped a lot I think).

All in all, a great experience (maybe not for him). He's back out in the field yesterday and is enjoying the sunshine today. Was really good to see the Vet at work; more than just the normal injections, poking and prodding etc.
