So listening to Karl Greenwood's hypnosis tape and reading his book (and practicing what's in it) is paying off as today i rode my 6 year old cob in the school in walk and trot and without panic!
I'm getting braver about putting my leg on and if he loses his balance or gets unsettled my automatic reaction is to now soften the hands rather than pull on the rein! The more you actively ride this horse, the calmer he gets. What he can't cope with is a passenger. I got him so calm today I actually had to use a lot of leg- a few months ago that much leg would have sent him into orbit!
Today I felt so good that had he had a fright I feel like I could have dealt with it.

Maybe there is hope for me yet?!

Sounds very hopeful, and good to hear you've found something to help set you on the right track :)
I'm actually surprised by how useful I'm finding it- I'm not one for self help books and the thought of hypnosis used to be a bit laughable. But I'm so much more in control of my emotions, I'm starting to feel like I can do this, my whole mindset is changing.
I'm still keeping my goals low and achievable but so far it's pretty good. ??

I have to keep my leg on on my spooky horse. But I use half halt outside rein a lot to control speed
He wasn't very well started by the looks of it and was scared of the leg. You couldn't really use it at all. As he was quite forward he was used to basically just running under his own steam. You can properly use your leg now and the more you instruct him the more settled he is.

So a little update.
Things are going very well indeed! My lad is nice and settled, no longer panics if rider moves, flatwork with my coach is great, has a good canter both ways and most importantly, I'm doing great psychologically !
We are hacking out on our own now, still just walk and trot but he has a nice , balanced trot now and works on the bit, plus I've got a much better saddle now so I feel pretty balanced on him.
As long as I'm calm and don't panic he will pretty much do whatever I ask.
He is a totally different horse from the scared neurotic mess that arrived last August.

I can't emphasise how much Karl Greenwood has helped me and what a difference it makes when you get your head sorted out.

Next milestone is to start cantering - I need to be confident that I won't hang on his mouth before I do that because he has a big issue with that.

The hypnosis tape is excellent isn't it?
Just today one of his quotes came into action when there were some concrete bollards on the track that my horse hasn't seen before and I could feel him hesitate a bit, and immediately I heard Karl's voice in my head saying "the horse will do exactly what you tell him to ". ? and he did !
