Some of you may have read my post in veterinary about abbey having a bad back again, well the physio came to look at her and she said she isnt right at the withers or poll and she is quite tight muscle wise just behind the saddle. she is coming back at the end of july and has said for me to do light hacking this week then I can start schooling again this weekend, so no jumping until she gives her the all clear.

Do you not fancy some local unaffiliated dressage?
I had a massive fall a few years ago at a two-day event and was out in hospital. To get me back to full confidence I started doing local dressage. I really enjoyed it and it was fun even though i am a hunting and XC girl too! Shows are great as well but just a lot of hanging around and it is very hard to get better at them in my opinion. With dressage though you get the comments sheet, you learn a new test each time and many places do a summer series so you go other week usually and then there is a championship at the end if you qualify!!!

Oh you poor thing! Why do these things always seem to happen when the weather gets better!
I would try local shows in hand stuff and just have some fun with her.
Is dressage out of the question? That may be a possibility, work in dressage and have a new focus till she is better.

I would intermpret your physio as thinking that there is something 'quite' wrong with your mare.

If that's the case I'm really suprised that she hasn't told you to take this further with your vet........

And that would certainly be my next port of call.

Ye dressage is an option but im not sure there is a summer series down here, would we qualify for veteran classes as she 14?

Amymay - well I did mention that to her but she said that I just need to take it slowly and build up the corect muscles in the right places and then she should be fine, but not to jump for the time being as that is wats causing her to misbehave. x

I'd still speak to my vet I'm afraid.

Do you have a good saddler as well - could there be a problem with the saddle?

Had the saddle checked and that is fine, i having her teeth done in the next few weeks aswell.

Maybe I will ring the vets and ask there advice aswell.

I agree with AmyMay, I knew Diva wasn't right and had my usual physio check her over and she said she was OK. I knew she wasn't and when she did something totally out of character I took her straight to the vets.

She was scanned to check her ovaries and her back was x-rayed to check for kissing spines. Thankfully these were all clear. She was diagnosed with severe muscle spasm in her back at the start of this year and it has taken us a really long time to get her back to 'normal'

She initially had two weeks total rest on high dosage of anti-inflamatory and pain killers and local topical applications of painkillers. I then worked with an equine physio who was recommended by my vet. (She was brilliant and it is thanks to her we got to the Winters!)

Her saddle was re-checked to rule out the possibilty of this causing a problem. She then underwent magnotherphy treatment 3 times a day for two weeks, building up to in-hand walking, then large lunging over poles, to eventually resuming ridden work under sedation - In all this took 8 weeks just to get to the hacking stage. I then used a hand held magnet massager before and after work for a further 6 weeks.

It required several visits from the physio and a lot of hard work from our head girl, me and OH.

She is now just getting to the point where I would say she is back to how she was this time last year. To say your horse is not right is not good enough. you know your horse isn't right which is why you have consulted a professional. If your horse is insured I would book an appointment with the vets to get to the root of the problem.

Good luck - hope it is something simple.

Poor girly and poor you...

Gwennap RC have dressage on all summer, they have dressage and SJ evenings aswell, maybe worth popping up and having a look? I haven't got my schedule but when I get it back I could PM all the dates to you if you like?
