Duke is on box rest as he has an abscess and is to be handgrazed every day. So far he's been OK is a little lively. Today however he was very excited to I took him into a small paddock as was afraid of losing him (on lunge line) was fine at first, then decided to run around like a loony, calmed down quite quickly but got his poultice boot off and is now a bit sore again

I made the wrong decision but wanted him to have a bit of respite from his stable and now feel awful.

Don't feel awful applechaff! I bet if he could speak and you'd asked him which do you want to do, have your abscess clear in 7 days but have to stay being handgrazed or have it clear in 8 days and have a hooley round the paddock...well, you know what he'd have said! Just re-do his poultice, sigh, shake your head and go and have a LARGE g&t! xxx

Thanks - I feel better for your comments, box of frogs - he walked back to his stable like an angel, think he really enjoyed himself. He did have the poultice, vetwrap, gaffa tape etc on but cant go in his own field as the walkways are like a river and our fields are clay and really waterlogged. He was filthy just from running around for 10 mins

Can't you poultice and then vetrap and then put lots of gaffa tape round it and turn him out? Thats what we do. They stay on have padding round the foot and keep the horse sane!

Good idea! Someone at my yard once did this but used nappies as the poltice - when my bemused face scrumpled up she said "it's waterproof and draws all the crap out of the abcess and they can still get turned out" - absolute genius!!
