ive been looking this up on the net as farrier informed me that my mare has seedy toe on both front hooves

feeling really down about it as it sounds a real pest to get rid of and sounds like it can cause lameness and cracks in the hooves etc

am getting really worried about it

for the moment - only found out this morning - ive put some purple spray on it but what product should i get to treat it properly?

can anyone reassure me that its not a massive problem?

Done a quick Google and it doesn't sound drastic. Care and correct maintenance should help prevent future issues. Did the farrier not recommend any treatment? Have you had chance to speak to the vet?

My boy has got it for the first time this year.
Only had it in one foot but other has now got it.
Farrier has cut away most of it and i now treat it with eucalyptus stuff and it's slowly going.
No lameness and hasn't been a huge problem really

The condition is not a problem as long as you keep the area very clean and open to the air (it is the air that kills off the bacteria).

I had a horrible situation where my horse had seedy toe which had not been picked up on and it had tracked all the way up his hoof, so when a new farrier picked up on it he had to cut away his hoof wall which caused him to get laminitis. Hence, it is very important to get on top of it immediately!

I use to clean the area twice a day just with a toothbrush and water and then cover in neat iodine (from the vet).

its not the end of the world..

I wouldnt let it worry you.

Keep it clean with an antibacterial such as hibiscrub, and you shouldnt have any issues

My boy has had it on and off for years! Farrier said it as a result of the damage caused by his last bad case of laminitis. By farrier is great and advised to shoe in with quater clips instead of toe clips. We leave him a little longer where possible bewteen shoeings so that the farrier can cut as much away as possible. I use dilatued hibiscrub every other day to keep clean and appy a hoof disinfectant. I used the Newmarket Hoof disinfectant but the one for Car Day and Martin is also really good.

Its not the end of the world - honest!

I bought a horse with seedy toe as a 6yo (passed 5* vet), he is now 23yos and never had a days lameness caused by having seedy toe (He's 17h IDx so a big boy). The farriers have kept on top of it, one used eucolyptus oil, he occassionally got cracks in his front toes in the summer when dry but I used to take him paddling in the local stream regularly to make sure his feet didn't dry out, if he did get a crack he had shoes with 2 clips at the front instead 1. TBH I have hardy had to do a thing in 16 odd years with regards to him having seedy toe when I think about it... just keep his feet clean

and now he's retired he livesout 24/7 (with shoes as he's flat footed) it has actually improved to the point where its virtually vanished

Seedy toe really is no big deal, I own donkeys so am a bit of an expert!! Make sure your farrier cuts away the hoof wall where it is affected to let the air get to it. There are many suggested products, the two most effective being iodine and tea tree. Try to keep the hooves reasonably dry too.
It rarely causes lameness or cracks and if found early should clear fairly quickly - depending partially on how fast the hooves grow.
Whatever you do, do not use anything that will enclose the area, such as stockholm tar, grease, hoof putty etc.

thank you peeps feeling better about it now.

i went and got some keretax hoof disinfectant for all types of bacteria and funguss' and have applied that tonight. it says that you only apply it every 2-3 days not sure im going to be able to stop myself putting it on everyday tho

think that'll be a problem?
