I am officially a wimp!

I am feeling terrible as I have just unfriended a charity on Facebook

I have a few as friends and this one does some great work

But I came in today after a bad day at work, went on Facebook for a game of Bejewelled (sad I know) But the most horrific pic I have seen for a long time came up on my wall.

I still cant get it out of my head. What made it worse was that I wasn't expecting anything like that.

I do wish people would not do that. It hasn't motivated me to find out more about the issue, its made be frightened to even look.

I unfriended them just to get rid of it.

Any thoughts

I totally understand where you're coming from - I have unfriended and blocked some people's posts because of things like that. Some pictures I have seen are burnt in my brain, and still traumatise me. I help where and when I can, but showing me horrific pictures will not make me suddenly rehome 5 dogs or donate thousands to charity. I don't have the space or the money, much as I would love to.

I so agree with you both, have nothing online but do get things sent in the mail, I do what I can when I can, but as you say some of the pictures do stay with you for a very long time. I understand they need to get these issues across but there must be a different way of doing it.

I can see where they are coming from in that they feel they may need vivid pictures to shock the masses into donating hence the mail we sometimes recieve. However I think its harder for those of us who understand more about animals as we have them ourselves and can maybe better imagine the pain those animals go through and the cruelty of the owners to do that to them. I remember reading an article which said the general public donate more money to animal charities than human ones and I think these pictures aimed sorely for the purpose of getting an emotional reaction may have something to do with it as they seem able to post more horrific images. I dont think there is any excuse for overposting the worst type of pictures on FB sites as if you have befriended them you are already aware of the issues and a picture of a sad looking animal is usually enough to get me feeling unhappy without the horrific ones :(. It does make you feel terrible when you already donate to as many as realisitically possible and then question whether you should further sacrifice your living standards to try and help more :(.

Thanks for your replies, I'm glad its not just me.

The pics of the before and the happy ending are far more likely to get me reading and donating that just making me feel completely sick and very disturbed.

I dont want to name and shame but I hope the people responsible read this. They do come on here.

totally agree on the before and after pics :) def the best motivator as it makes you see the good your money's doing and feel content with giving help/ makes you want to donate as you can see what your money will help achieve :)

Wonder if it was the same picture that popped up on my homepage today....did involve dogs?? ended up hiding the post, because I really didn't want to have it keep popping up on my homepage under the 'interesting' posts pretence! :( :(

I know exactly which photos you mean Sue, I was silly enough to look through the whole lot and felt so sick and upset by the end of them. I suppose it is to raise awareness but I just felt helpless really, where and how the hell do you start dealing with cruelty of that magnitude.

I think there's an option to not show posts from certain people/groups so you could have stayed "friends" but not seen the posts.

But I know where you're coming from. I've unfriended a few charities because I was sick of my wall constantly being clogged up with pictures of dead and dying animals. Facebook is meant to be fun not morbid. That doesn't mean I won't support them in real life.

i got one once except it was a video - i was 11 at the time (i know i shouldnt have had fb but i did) and i watched like 20secs of it and i cried hysterically for about an hour and the worst thing is i listened it with sound :( i still get upset thinking about it - theres somethings that are too horrific to put up on the internet although it did make me all to aware of things that happen in different countries and how we think we are nothing to do with it but we really are as we buy the products :(

I will never buy anything with goose down after seeing how they get it, I cried buckets after watching a video of that horror. I always assumed it came from dead birds, it doesn't, they are live plucked again and again and to hear them crying during and after was heartbreaking.

Was it the pic of the galgos/Spanish greyhounds?
Shocking pic but I need to look at those things to remind me as humans what we are capable of. FGS, just shoot the poor buggers and make it quick and clean if you need rid, oh no, you could not waste a precious bullet on an animal that has worked its socks off for you :(

i never saw that one the one i saw was the live skinning of the puppies in china :( and then they would make them in to fur coats over here saying it was rabbit and goat fur - truly sickening i just dont understand some people :(

That wasn't a charity was it? I've just been looking at them and its just a group someone seems to have made to shock I think. I'm not sure what it is achieving

The one on my wall was...I'm sorry, I understand that we live in a society where there are so many people that IMO must have some sort of personality disorder to feel they have the right to do this, I know that there are so many sick and disturbed individuals...I just don't need to see the pictures, it doesn't make me want to donate more, it makes me switch off....I am aware, i don't need to see the evidence...I donate anyway!!!!!!!!:(

Ive blocked a fair few images from fb as I just dont want to see them on my wall. It makes me feel terrible but I just dont have the money to support every cause :(

Please, please nobody feel guilty for unfriending or blocking such groups/sites, whatever. Any responsible charity genuinely committed to helping would not use distressing images to promote their cause, be it random animal or specific human. This is manipulative exploitation, as has already been said. Utilised to make as much money out of sympathetic and caring people. PETA’s site is particularly horrendous for it. And I’ll bet the ‘victims’ get bugger all out of it.

If you wish to help support your own local animal sanctuary or peoples refuge etc. Those bigwigs that can afford to advertise (in whatever way) clearly are not spending the donations appropriately.

It's nothing to do with charity, it's a shared photo from a different group...sadly this sort of stuff happens in this world and it's better people know about it than take a back seat and pretend it's not happening

I had no idea about the goose down...i feel sick just thinking about it.

I donate to animal charities on a monthly basis. I asked that they do not send me the literature though as it makes me so upset at the pictures.

I take slight comfort that the animals in my care and responsibility are cared for in the highest standards, and i help through donations for the ones that i cannot physically help.

Yes but it's not necessary to post the pictures....I know child pornograhy happens but I don't need to see pics to make me 'aware' :( We live in a sick, sick world. :(

I don't have anything with feathers due to allergies but this is shocking :( Does this happen in the UK, or do we shut our eyes to the practise then buy in goose down jackets from abroad? Synthetics all the way then.

I don't know? I thought it was dead birds, I can't think it would happen here, but I have never seen a down quilt tell you the place of origin.

Like you though allergies prevent me from having them
