Feeling very sad:(

My gelding died last year, freak field accident and from me arriving to the vet and the company to take his body was 2hr 16 mins it totally broke my heart and to be told a 7k operation would result in a less then 10% chance of him being field sound tore me as I so wanted to give him that chance but I just knew what I did was right, he hated vets and he couldn't have bared a 12 month box rest as he was previously abused and claustrophobic.... I do get how u r feeling xx

I'm very sorry to hear this:( but you did the right thing. I would never box rest for that long! x

Putting feelings and finances to one side for around 20 years possibly more? Doesn't seem fair on the OP in my opinion.

Life's to short to not live and enjoy it.

Yes, but some people actually love their horses and don't just view them as a tool to enjoy their hobby. If the OP has decided to keep her horse, I find it very distasteful you trying to urge her to PTS. For some people that is just not an option as rightly or wrongly they would be racked with guilt.

Ouch... Was it a riding accident caused by his issues? Hope you heal quickly. It is heartbreaking really... I long to ride him but had is too u predictable.

Yes it was a riding accident last week, airlifted to hospital an the works .... and yes caused by his unpredictabilty ... he`d been going really well this year, and had been fantastic for about 2 weeks, thought we`d finally cracked it and then **boom** ... This is what he does ... so retirement it is x

Wow...sounds awful... Sounds like the reason I have decided to retire mine. 6 days out of 7 he will be amazing and then on the 7th day he will have one of his explosions...usually bronking till I come off, something as small as another horse going over a jump nearby can cause it so I figure it's safer to give up the riding. It sucks though.

Personally, I didn't think Brambridge04 was trying to urge julie111 to euthanise her horse, I thought she/he was simply trying to clarify their opinion. And I don't think that a different view on horse ownership, is necessarily a proof of how much they love or not love their horse.

Lots of hugs.

DCJACE I hope that you recover as quickly and well as possible.

I thought Brambridge made a sensible suggestion. Fair enough if OP doesn't want to. I wouldn't put mine down either, although I have my own land and stables.

Julie111 you would easily be able to find a share horse to ride. There are loads around. You'll still be able to keep your horse and get your riding fix.

Thanks again everyone! I have been offered two ponies to ride, tbh at the moment I feel quite numb and not up to riding but I'm sure my mojo will come back :)

Didn't intend it to come across as "urging" I was simply trying to make the point that although it can be a heart wrenching and awful decision to make, not every one will think your selfish and judge you.

Her decision should be respected. And I respect her decision... Perhaps the way I worded myself didn't come across well! I'm not good with words hence the initial don't think I'm callous lol!

Hugs to OP - a really tough call but whilst I wouldn't be able to afford to keep a field ornament on livery - I can't do diy on a yard due to work/family, I have had more enjoyment out of my unridden pony at home ( too small for me and rubbish hacking + no school although daughter started a bit in field now ) then I ever got out of my ridden horse on full livery. The little things mean more now. I have had loads of offers to ride but it has got less important.

Thank you ... I`ll be ok, got a long recovery ahead, but I can still walk which is good x

Hmmmm, bless you, well let me be your cautionary tale xx ... I lost all feeling in my feet and legs due to the spinal trauma and have never been so scare in my life ... it`s not worth it, it truly isn`t. x
